Numerous Scripps Research scientists named Highly Cited Researchers Clarivate's annual, global list represents researchers who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field of research.

November 15, 2023

LA JOLLA, CA This year, eight scientists at Scripps Research have been included in Clarivate's annual list of Highly Cited Researchers . Clarivate defines this group as individuals who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field or fields of research. Of the global population of scientists, Highly Cited Researchers represent 1 in every 1,000 people.

The 2023 list includes 7,127 total researcher awards, issued to 6,849 individuals. These names are drawn from the publications that rank in the top 1 percent by citations for field and publication each year in the Web of Science citation index. Clarivate creates the list based on a multi-dimensional evaluation and selection strategy, including combining information available with the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) .

The Scripps Research scientists named to this year's list include:

Chemistry

Phil Baran, PhD, chemistry professor and Darlene Shiley Chair in Chemistry Baran explores ways to circumvent the bottlenecks of sustainable, scalable production that allow natural organic molecules to be transformed into viable therapies.

Jin-Quan Yu, PhD, chemistry professor; Bristol Myers Squibb Endowed Chair in Chemistry, Frank and Bertha Hupp Professor of Chemistry Yu's pioneering chemistry research has paved the way for powerful new techniques used in fields ranging from drug discovery to materials science.

Microbiology

Dennis Burton, PhD, professor and chair of Immunology and Microbiology Burton has made significant contributions toward ongoing efforts to create vaccines for HIV and potential pandemic viruses that include coronaviruses.

Microbiology and Biology/Biochemistry

Ian Wilson, PhD, chair of Integrative Structural and Computational Biology, Hansen Professor of Structural Biology Wilson is focused on viral pathogens, vaccine design and structural depictions of the immune system revealing key insights about SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1 and influenza.

Cross-field

Ardem Patapoutian, PhD, professor of neuroscience Patapoutian researches the protein sensors that enable humans to feel different chemical and physical stimuli, including pain, temperature and pressure. He was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology for first discovering these sensors.

William Schief, PhD, professor of immunology and microbiology Schief is working to develop an effective HIV vaccine using a novel strategy: eliciting broadly neutralizing antibodies.

Eric Topol, MD, executive vice president and professor of molecular medicine, Scripps Research, director and founder of Scripps Research Translational Institute Topol's scientific focus has been on the use of genomic and digital data, along with artificial intelligence, to individualize medicine.

John Yates, PhD, professor of molecular medicine Yates is the lead inventor of the SEQUEST software and algorithm, which laid a critical foundation for the proteomics field and dramatically enhanced the accuracy and effectiveness of mass spectrometry.

Wilson, Burton, Yu and Baran have all been featured as a Highly Cited Researcher in the past since Clarivate published the first ranking nine years ago. This is Schief's seventh, Patapoutian's and Yates' sixth, and Topol's fourth time appearing on the list.

Additionally, there are multiple scientists ranked who published much of their Highly Cited Research while their primary affiliation was Scripps Research. These include Robert Kirchdoerfer and Laura Niedernhofer in the cross-field category, as well as Vadim Cherezov in pharmacology and toxicology.

The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at Scripps Research whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community and innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Their contributions resonate far beyond their individual achievements, strengthening the foundation of excellence and innovation in research, says David Pendlebury, head of research analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate.
