
Paris, 4 April 2019 - MIPTV today announces it is giving official support to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals Media Compact initiative.
Launched on 23 September 2018, the UN's Sustainable Development Goals Media Compact sets out to advance awareness of sustainability issues among the media and entertainment companies, and to leverage their resources and creative talent to advance the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all world leaders at the UN in 2015 as a blueprint to achieving a better future for all by 2030. The 17 goals aim to promote prosperity everywhere while protecting the planet, and include an end to extreme poverty, achieving gender equality, access to quality education, clean water, and sanitation for all, addressing climate change, and much more.
Currently 46 member media organisations support the initiative encompassing more than 100 media and entertainment outlets, representing 80 countries and four continents.
MIPTV invites its constituent members to also become SDG Media Compact Members and to act as agents of change with the power to reach out to millions of viewers. The United Nations has welcomed MIPTV's new initiative and has expressed appreciation for its efforts to raise awareness about work that inspires millions of viewers and young people and promotes support for its Agenda 2030 programme.
In parallel with the Sustainable Development Goals initiative, MIPTV 2019 is hosting a keynote showcase which puts the spotlight on protection of the planet and its oceans, with a presentation of Seeker's The Swim, a documentary about Ben Lecomte's record breaking swim across the Pacific Ocean to highlight ocean pollution and plastic contamination.
Lecomte will be in Cannes to discuss his achievement and the impact it had on awareness about plastic pollution, and describe how The Swim took shape as the full creative expression of his vision, brought to life across all screens during his journey (including a partnership with Discovery, which aired updates of The Swim on its TV and OTT channels.) He will share the stage with Suzanne Kolb, Chief Brand Officer at Group Nine Media, who oversaw the development and execution of The Swim, and Jared McGilliard, partner at Nomadica Films, which produced and directed the film. Together they will discuss the unique approach Group Nine's digital brand Seeker took to cover his journey in real-time and the challenges they faced while doing that from the middle of the Pacific Ocean. At the end of the session, MIPTV will premiere the trailer for the film.
