Some of us have been lamenting the loss of some of our favourite old haunts (mentioned recently in our blog: Save Soho & Long Live Independence ) and feeling slightly disturbed by what might be filling the massive gaps created by all the demolition on Broadwick St and other sites in Soho, so we were happy to re-discover Great Windmill Street the other day, where a few positive moves for independence are happening.
Soho Radio for one. Behind this cool little cafe is a real live radio station broadcasting to the world. You can see the artists performing live in the studio. DJs include Primal Screams Simone Marie and English DJ and Mod Record Label Entrepreneur Eddie Piller, amongst others.
Weve also been excited to see Jac & Jack open its flagship London store here a beautiful Aussie clothing brand with a boutique store just next to the Ham Yard Hotel. Their clothes have a focus on premium natural fibres and high quality manufacturing with integrity. Chic, sustainable and independent! Another little beauty is Dinosaur Designs, who all good Aussies will know about. Folk is a staple for many a dapper fellow.
The bright yellow WHAAM shop popped up under development recently. We were delighted to see when it opened this month that its yet another independent shop This time a Vietnamese Banh Mi deli. Yum! Japanese Ramen bar Sasuke is also on the same side and we are pleased its not completely new kids on the block with Piccadilly Italian restaurant still going strong since the 60s. Through a low key doorway we found a staircase leading down to Blacklock where its all about the chops! Similar to another favourite of Finish, Chicken Shop, Blacklock is part of the new specialised menu trend. So if you (and your friends) woke up this morning and thought Id like chops for dinner then this is the place for you.
So its not all doom and gloom for the shopping scene in Soho. Head down to Great Windmill Street and grab yourself a taste of Soho independence and maybe some other treats too!
