With the votes in and counted for the Global Youth Video Competition on Climate Change, part of tvebiomovies, two young film makers have been selected as the winners of the GYVCC 2018.
With one view equalling one vote, the winners both aged 20, battled tough competition from 19 other shortlisted films on action to combat climate change. Vikas Yadav, from India produced the winning film in the category Green and climate friendly jobs' while Andrea Sofia Rosales Vega from Mexico took the prize for her film in the category Responsible production and consumption'.
They will both travel to the International Climate Change Conference (COP 24) in Katowice, Poland in December and will work with the UN's Climate Change communications team to report on the meeting for a global youth audience. tve representatives will join with UN Climate Change to celebrate the winners' achievement in a ceremony at the COP24 Action Hub on Thursday 6 December.
Sofia Vega's film reports on the Eco Urban' project, which works in the Mexican city of Toluca to clean up and re-use waste such as plastic and old clothes. The waste is recycled and turned into useful raw materials by social enterprise companies. The profit is reinvested in collection centres with 60% of the income being used to fight childhood cancer. As Sofia says at the close of the video, the participants are ordinary people, making our world extraordinary. Watch Sofia's film here: youtube.com/watch?v=SQUaJt_HNC0
Vikas Yadav's short film visits rural India, where more than 70 per cent of the population works in agriculture. With food production particularly sensitive to climate change, Vikas talks to farmers to find out how innovative farming methods can play an important role in absorbing CO2 and reducing the impact of climate change.
