5G set to become the dominant mobile technology in North America by the end of 2023, according to the GSMA's Mobile Economy Report for North America
26 September 2023, Las Vegas: GSMA MWC Las Vegas 2023 returns to the Las Vegas Convention Center today convening connectivity leaders from mobile and adjacent industries for three days of lively discussion, debate and networking on the trends shaping the future of connectivity.
Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA said, Since Marty Cooper's first cellular phone call, North America has always been at the center of mobile innovation. Fast forward to 2023 and the same is just as true, as 5G enters maturity in the region and the industry makes great strides in new areas including AI, Web 3.0, quantum computing and more. At MWC Las Vegas we celebrate the mobile operators, startups, developers, cloud providers and policymakers who are showcasing how mobile connectivity is transforming our world.
Findings from the GSMA's annual Mobile Economy North America report show that in the US and Canada, ambitious rollout plans of operators and strong demand from consumers for new will see 5G overtake 4G this year to become the dominant mobile technology in North America, with adoption rates of 5G expected to reach 59% in the US by the end of 2023.
New at MWC Las Vegas
In a number of firsts, attendees will be able to attend several new GSMA Programs at the show, including the inaugural Open Gateway DevCon, which brings together industry pioneers and developers on Day 2 and follows the launch of the GSMA Open Gateway initiative at MWC Barcelona 2023. Speakers will discuss how developers can collaborate closely with mobile operators and cloud service providers to develop new 5G services in an API economy world.
In another first, the GSMA will bring its SEC CON event on day two, welcoming leading security experts to explore the importance of keeping telecoms infrastructure secure in times of conflict. Additional GSMA Programs include the Satellite and NTN Summit; the 5G Futures Summit; the Sustainability Summit; the eSIM Summit; the 5G IoT Summit; Private Wireless: A New Era in Enterprise Mobility, Automation and Productivity; the Security Summit Strengthening Mobile Ecosystem Security; the 5G Connected Car Summit and our Second Post Quantum Network Seminar.
As is fitting with MWC Las Vegas taking place in the entertainment capital of the world, the MWC Las Vegas edition of Industry City is launching the all-new Sports & Entertainment Summit, sitting alongside the Manufacturing, FinTech and Smart Mobility Summits. The Sports & Entertainment Summit will host some of the most celebrated names in the industry, with Indycar champion Tony Kanaan, regarded as one of the most successful drivers in the sport's history, talking with Eric Clark, CEO, Americas NTT Ltd to discuss how digital technology has transformed the racing experience and helped him engage with fans.
The Summit will also explore how stadiums and large entertainment venues are making the most of mobile technology. JMA Wireless will have several experiential demos at its booth (Booth 310, Exhibition Hall) demonstrating the modern-day fan experience - this will include an AR demo of some of the groundbreaking experiences the company helped to create at Las Vegas' very own Allegiant Stadium - which next February will host the Big Game.
Showcasing the mobile ecosystem
The GSMA will welcome a distinguished line-up of keynote speakers, including leaders from AT&T Business, AWS, Boingo Wireless, Carolina West Wireless, the CTIA, the NTIA, NTT, Schneider Electric, T-Mobile USA, Telness Group, the US Department of Defense and Verizon Business. All keynotes will take place at the Keynote Stage - W236, Level 3, and will be live-streamed via Mobile World Live and available on-demand here.
In addition to showcasing the thriving Las Vegas startup community, local companies that are set to disrupt the connectivity ecosystem in the coming years will be at the HUB Startup & Innovation Zone.
