The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road kept their industry awards streaks alive Wednesday with nominations from the American Society of Cinematographers. Both films have also been recognized by the Screen Actors Guild, American Cinema Editors, Art Directors Guild and Producers Guild of America this year.
The nominations mark, respectively, Emmanuel Lubezki's sixth and John Seale's fifth from the group to date. Lubezki has won four ASC awards, for Children of Men, The Tree of Life, Gravity and Birdman. He won back-to-back Oscars for the latter two. Seale won both the ASC prize and the Oscar for The English Patient.
The other nominees in the feature film category were Janusz Kaminski ( Bridge of Spies ), Ed Lachman ( Carol ) and Roger Deakins ( Sicario ).
The highest profile miss was Robert Richardson for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight, particularly given the work that went into resurrecting an archaic format with Ultra Panavision lenses and shooting on 65mm film.
Richardson, who has ten ASC nominations to his credit, has never won the prize, yet has triumphed three times at the Oscars, for JFK, The Aviator and Hugo. Conversely, Deakins has won three ASC awards, yet remains Oscarless (despite 12 Academy Award nominations to date). This is his 14th ASC nomination.
Richardson was also passed over by the ASC for Tarantino's Django Unchained two years ago, yet managed a nomination from the Academy's cinematography branch. It would be unwise to count him or other DPs like M ty s Erd ly ( Son of Saul ) and Dariusz Wolski ( The Martian ) out of the Oscar race just yet. Only twice in the last decade has the ASC's lineup matched the Academy's, allowing for films as disparate as Ida and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to find room at the Oscars.
Regardless of the Hateful Eight exclusion, the five ASC-nominated films still represent a wide cross-section of technology available to cinematographers today. Bridge of Spies was shot on traditional 35mm film; Carol was shot on 16mm; Mad Max and Sicario were filmed digitally on the Arri Alexa camera; and The Revenant utilized the new large-format Arri Alexa 65 camera.
Previously announced, Gotham and Marco Polo led the television nominees.
Once again, the film nominees for the 30th annual ASC Awards:
Bridge of Spies (Janusz Kaminski)
Carol (Ed Lachman)
Mad Max: Fury Road (John Seale)
The Revenant (Emmanuel Lubezki)
Sicario (Roger Deakins)
Winners will be unveiled on Feb. 14 during the ASC Awards gala at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
