More than 50 years since the release of Riyoko Ikeda's masterpiece, The Rose of Versailles, its anime film adaptation is set to stream exclusively on Netflix from April 30. This tale of romances and fate unfolds during the turbulent French Revolution vividly bringing to life the world of Oscar - a beautiful woman raised as a boy by a distinguished general - and an ensemble of unforgettable characters. Set in the prosperous late 18th century, they embrace their destinies with grace and beauty, despite being swept along by the times.

In an era of restrictions, Oscar defies the societal limits of status and gender, choosing her own path and bravely leaping into the French Revolution. Her courageous and beautiful way of life garnered empathy and adoration from many young girls.

Gaining fervent support from readers throughout its run, Riyoko Ikeda's manga serialized in Weekly Margaret (published by Shueisha) since 1972, has sold over 20 million copies and caused a wide-ranging social phenomenon in Japan, adapted to the stage by the Takarazuka Revue theater company and as an anime series. It's widely regarded as a landmark in girls manga.

A talented creative team brought this film to life, directed by Ai Yoshimura (Ao Haru Ride, Cheer Boys!!), with a screenplay by Tomoko Komparu (Uta no Prince-sama, From Me to You: Kimi ni Todoke) and character designs by Mariko Oka (First Love Monster, Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan). Hiroyuki Sawano (Attack on Titan) produced the music, which he composed together with KOHTA YAMAMOTO (Ooku: The Inner Chambers). Animation studio MAPPA (Jujutsu Kaisen, In This Corner of the World) produced the film. With its stunning music and captivating performances, this beloved story continues to enchant audiences.

The singer Ayaka brings her powerful voice to the theme song, "Versailles," which she wrote for the film. Hitomi Kuroki, who became a huge fan of The Rose of Versailles as a cast member of the Takarazuka Revue, lends her voice as the film's narrator.

Story Oscar Fran ois de Jarjayes, a beautiful woman who dresses in mens clothing, was raised as a boy by a distinguished general. Marie Antoinette arrives from neighboring Austria as a bride to become a noble and graceful queen. Andr Grandier is Oscars servant and childhood friend. Meanwhile, Hans Axel von Fersen is a handsome and intelligent count from Sweden. Converging in Versailles, France in the prosperous late 18th century, they embrace their destinies with grace and beauty despite being swept along by the times.
