The movie The Vanished Dream, del director espa ol Juan S. Betancor, ha ganado el Premio Richard Leacock al Mejor Largometraje del 17 Festival Internacional de Cine de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
El jurado encargado de valorar los trabajos presentados en la secci n competitiva Canarias Cinema, integrado por Javier H. Estrada, cr tico en Caim n. Cuadernos de cine, profesor y programador de cine; la periodista y publicista especializada en Cultura Marina Lanza; y Joan Sala, editor en Filmin y programador del Atl ntida Film Fest, ha destacado del premio otorgado a The Vanished Dream, dotado con 3.000 euros para su director, la solidez de su narraci n hist rica, la reivindicaci n de un idealismo activo y genuino que hoy parece desaparecido, profundizando en una cuesti n de gran relevancia en el presente . Un documental , prosigue el jurado en su argumentaci n, que pone en valor la importancia de los proyectos no culminados .

Juan S. Betancor (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 1973) se ala que este premio es un reconocimiento al trabajo de cientos de j venes que en los a os 70 decidieron abandonar sus c modos hogares en la Europa desarrollada para construir un desarrollo m s justo en los nuevos pa ses que se iban independizando en frica. A nivel personal, recibir este premio en mi ciudad es emocionante; me siento muy feliz de sentirme reconocido en mi tierra .
Una mirada diferente de Guinea Bissau
The Vanished Dream, escrita por V ctor Giner, narra la historia de los j venes voluntarios europeos que se trasladaron a Guinea Bissau, frica Occidental, siguiendo sus sue os de un mundo mejor, tras la independencia del pa s en los a os 70. Eran a os de entusiasmo e idealismo cuando la construcci n de una naci n social y justa en frica era un sue o alcanzable.
The documentary, produced by Siddhartha Films, tells how time passed and those dreams were beaten by a reality of unrest and political instability, returning home the majority of the volunteers, but keeping so alive their bittersweet memories of paradise lost as the day that they left. The film was shot in Guinea Bissau, Holland, Serbia, Portugal, Sweden and United Kingdom following the traces of those volunteers who left the country decades ago.
Guinea Bissau is one of the least developed nations in Africa. It has become well-known in recent years for its political instability and military coups continued, which has meant that some international media defined it as "the first narco-State". This simplistic view hides the reality of a diverse society that coexist in relative peace.
Juan S. Betancor, film director, studied at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. In 2006, she directed the documentary Sons of the silver mountain, premiado en diferentes festivales internacionales. Desde entonces ha enfocado su trabajo en la producci n y direcci n de v deos institucionales sobre la ayuda al desarrollo, trabajando en diferentes pa ses africanos. Una de estas producciones le condujo a Guinea Bissau, donde se familiariz con las historias humanas de The Vanished Dream.
V ctor Giner, co-author of the documentary, has a degree in law and has studied in Spain, Germany and Belgium development cooperation. He has worked in this field in Cuba, Morocco, Guinea Bissau and China, combining his work in international development cooperation collaborations as film critic and teacher.
