At the Archives at Risk conference (Dublin: 1-3 June) Jean-Christophe Kummer, managing partner of NOA, will present a paper on the work his company has been doing with the Austrian government to secure funding for media archiving initiatives in developing countries.

The Austrian export bank of finance sees clearly that creating an archive of digitized content is as essential to a country as a water purification plant or a hospital, said Kummer. Digitized archive material serves to support and extend socialization, historical understanding, and democratic development and, as such, the bank believes that it is therefore eligible for export financing. This means that archiving systems delivered by NOA to emerging nations can be financed by the bank over an extended period at very attractive interest rates.
Typically, emerging markets can be helped to develop sustainable archiving strategies with NOA tools, and NOA has already completed such projects in Mexico, Mongolia, Sudan and Vietnam. In Dublin, Kummer will discuss these projects, and also present the changing list of countries who are similarly eligible for funding.
Archives at Risk is a volunteer-powered group of audiovisual archivists and associations working to connect public or private archives that are at risk to the resources needed to save these important cultural collections.
