WASHINGTON (March 6, 2014)-National Geographic today announced the launch of the National Geographic Kids Engineering Exploration Challenge in the April issue of National Geographic Kids magazine. The Challenge gives budding engineers worldwide the opportunity to try to solve some of the technical problems that National Geographic explorers face in the eld every day.
From now until May 1, 2014, youngsters ages 6-18 are invited to develop and submit a solution to one of three challenges described on the Challenge website:
Constructing a camera that can withstand an attack from an animal;
Creating a camera that can be raised and lowered into a forest canopy; or
Designing a wearable power system that can generate electricity to charge devices in the field without the use of an electrical outlet.
Some submitted solutions will be selected for presentation in a National Geographic Google+ Hangout in May, during which they will be tested by National Geographic engineers in the top-secret Engineering Lab.
We hope the National Geographic Kids Engineering Exploration Challenge will spark children's and teens' interest in engineering while teaching fundamentals of engineering science and demonstrating the unique work undertaken by National Geographic explorers and grantees, said Kathleen Schwille, vice president, education design and development, Education Programs, National Geographic. National Geographic's mission is to inspire people to care about the planet, and we firmly believe that today's most pressing global issues will be solved by tomorrow's engineers.
