American Underground Launching More Coworking Space in Durham

American Underground will launch additional coworking space in Durham in March, utilizing some 7,000 square feet of space in the historic S.H. Kress & Co. building, which was built in 1933..

Called Gridworks, the new effort is the latest in a series of projects developed by AU, which is based at the American Tobacco Historic District.

AU, which launched in 2010 in the basement of the district campus, already operates three coworking sites in Durham and in Raleigh.

The space is being unfit to meet the needs of small businesses, according to AU, which formally announced the project Wednesday.

Located in the heart of the Bull City, Gridworks Durham gives professionals a place to collaborate, work, and contribute to the city's electric pulse, the AU says in its website pitch. Durham is where creatives dazzle crowds, restaurants delight taste buds, and entrepreneurs build bridges to the future. Amenities will include:

large coworking space

individual office suites

three conference rooms

call rooms

individual mailboxes

Guiding the development of both Gridworks and the American Underground is the belief that Durham is a uniquely fertile city to launch a business in, whether you are an ambitious startup or attorney, said Adam Klein, chief strategist for American Underground, in the announcement.
