WASHINGTON (July 29, 2013)-National Geographic magazine will be translated, published and distributed in Taiwan by local publisher Boulder Publishing, a subsidiary of IDG, it was announced today. The new edition, debuting with the September issue, will be published in Chinese (traditional characters). For the first time, IDG will also make the magazine available to Chinese readers in Taiwan, Hong Kong and elsewhere as an e-edition for iOS devices.
A pilot issue of the print magazine, at a discount price of NT$99 (approximately US$3.21), will be on the shelves of all magazine retail channels starting July 25. The magazine will officially launch in September as a monthly magazine, with initial circulation of 80,000, available for NT$200 (approximately US$6.67). Yungshih Lee will serve as editor-in-chief.
Boulder Publishing Taiwan, founded by Lee, is National Geographic's book publishing partner in Taiwan. With Boulder Publishing, National Geographic has released 70 books in the Taiwanese market since 2010, including such successful titles as The Photographs, currently in its fourth printing; Ultimate Field Guide to Photography, currently in its fourth printing; and Angry Birds Space: A Furious Flight in the Final Frontier, now in its ninth printing.
Boulder Publishing has been a strong partner for National Geographic in Taiwan with our book properties, and through this expanded relationship with IDG and Boulder Publishing, we are pleased to be able to bring our flagship magazine to Taiwan, said Terry Adamson, executive vice president of the National Geographic Society. We are especially excited to work with them to produce an electronic edition of the magazine, which will be available for our readers in Taiwan and Hong Kong for the first time.
The Taiwanese edition of the magazine will closely follow the editorial copy and layout of the English-language edition and will feature some local content.
