Mandela dea: African and global reaction on Al Jazeera

The full range of Al Jazeera Englishs news, programmes and online output is being used to reflect on the life and death of Nelson Mandela.

Correspondents Haru Mutasa and Tania Page were live in Johannesburg and Soweto immediately after his passing was announced, relaying the grief on the ground.

They will be joined by South Africans Mike Hanna and Jonah Hull. Hanna is a veteran journalist, noted for his coverage from the country during apartheid and the post-apartheid transition.

Live reaction is being broadcast from across Africa - with crews in Nairobi, Juba, Abuja, Dhaka, and Goma - and the world - Washington DC, Paris and Beijing.

The channels programmes are also discussing his legacy. I Knew Mandela tells the story of his life through the eyes of the people who were close to him, including Winnie Mandela, Zinzi Mandela, Graca Michel and Desmond Tutu.

The Stream is collecting worldwide reactions on social media, Inside Story will have three South African guests, and next week on South2North, Redi Tlhabi will talk to three people who made documentaries about Madiba.

Al Jazeera is currently also airing the South Africa UP series, which shows the lives of children born in 1985 every seven years of their lives. The previous episodes charting their journey through post-apartheid South Africa are currently being broadcast, leading up to the new series, 28UP, beginning next month.

Al Jazeera English spokesperson Osama Saeed said: Nelson Mandela is mourned within South Africa and internationally as an inspiration to those who are oppressed and deprived. His journey, before, during and after spending 27 years in prison tell a story of an individual who, devoted his life to democracy, equality and learning. As we mark his death our coverage will look back at his life, assess his legacy and look forward to a South Africa that may one day realise the vision of Mandela and his anti-apartheid campaigners.
