First-ever Storyscapes Section Showcases Innovative New Media Projects with Cross-platform Approaches to Storytelling
New York, NY (March 6, 2013) The Tribeca Film Festival (TFF), presented by American Express, today announced its feature film selections in the Spotlight and Midnight sections, projects in the new Storyscapes section and Special Screenings. The 12th edition of the Festival will take place from April 17 to April 28 in New York City.
The Spotlight section features 33 films -- 21 narratives and 12 documentaries -- that blur the lines of independent and mainstream filmmaking. Twenty-three films in the selection will have their world premieres at the Festival, a record number for the section. The Midnight section formerly known as Cinemania will open with Dark Touch and offers an international menagerie of seven raucous and rousing new horror titles. Special screenings this year include the reintroduction of the Restored/Rediscovered program with Charles Lane's Sidewalk Stories and a special screening of Alberi by Michaelangelo Frammartino at VW Dome at MoMA PS1 Performance Dome, among other selections.
The documentary films in the Spotlight section this year highlight several famous individuals (including one very cute cat) who use their wit and bold personas to make us think and laugh, said Genna Terranova, Director of Programming. A mix of established filmmakers and rising talent top off the rest of the section with features exploring some fresh takes on unconventional relationships.
Featuring telekinetic children, mad scientists and middle-class suburban cannibals, this years Midnight section is more diverse and entertaining than ever before, and a true celebration of the innovative, risky and groundbreaking stories and styles that can only be found in genre cinema, said programmer Cara Cusumano.
New to TFF this year, and joining a range of programs at the Festival that bridge filmmaking and technology, is Storyscapes created in collaboration with BOMBAY SAPPHIRE Gin. This multi-platform transmedia program celebrates new trends in digital media and recognizes filmmakers and content creators who employ an interactive, web-based or cross-platform approach to story creation. Curated by the TFF Programming team along with Ingrid Kopp, Director of Digital Initiatives for the Tribeca Film Institute, the Storyscapes program will present five selections at a public, interactive installation at the Bombay Sapphire House of Imagination (121 Varick Street, 7th Floor) starting from April 19 April 21, 2013.
The possibilities for telling stories are evolving and our aim is to create an immersive space where this participatory, transmedia work can be experienced, said Ingrid Kopp, Director of Digital Initiatives for the Tribeca Film Institute. I am honored to have been a part of this Festival-first and cannot think of a better location than New York City for such a vibrant conversation around this emerging art form. We look forward to building a community in this space where storytelling and technology, authorship and openness meet.

Tribeca's Spotlight section offers World Premieres and advance premieres with bold-faced names, topics of interest from both established and emerging filmmakers. Documentaries profiling famous and influential figures abound, from comedians like Moms Mabley in Whoopi Goldberg's I Got Somethin' To Tell You, Broadway legend Elaine Stritch in Elaine Stritch: Shoot Me and icon Richard Pryor in Richard Pryor: Omit The Logic, to sports stars (McConkey), artists (Inside Out: The People's Art Project), designers (The Director), intellectuals (Gore Vidal: United States Of Amnesia) and even criminal masterminds (In God We Trust). Highlighting the individual is not the only theme, as a number of the films focus on dynamic duos, including the identical twins at the center of romantic comedy The Pretty One, the indie buddy comedies Prince Avalanche and Almost Christmas or the immersive drama taking place between couples in Richard Linklater's final chapter to his trilogy, Before Midnight, and sexy two-hander Some Velvet Morning. Beyond siblings, friends and lovers, there is perhaps no more potent partnership than that between parent and child, and this year's films demonstrate a marked interest in exploring this fundamental family relationship. A father kidnaps his daughter's suspected murderer in Israeli vigilante thriller Big Bad Wolves, sons question their relationships to their fathers in the pastoral drama At Any Price and Greetings From Tim Buckley, while daughters and mothers clash in Bottled Up and Neil Jordan's gothic vampire drama Byzantium. Join the biggest names and some of the most exciting premieres in Tribeca's always-excellent Spotlight section.
Adult World, directed by Scott Coffey, written by Andy Cochran. (USA) World Premiere, Narrative. Amy (Emma Roberts) is na ve, awkward and anxious to get her poetry career off of the ground. She begrudgingly accepts a job at the local sex shop, Adult World, while pursuing a surefire kick-start for her success: a mentorship with reclusive writer Rat Billings (the hilarious John Cusack).
