Story Highlights
Measure, a drone as a service company, recently provided a DJI Inspire II drone system for coverage of the 2017 FISA World Rowing Championships at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota-Bradenton, FL (Sept. 29 - Oct. 1). NEP enlisted Measure to provide the drone for aerial coverage of the event, which aired on the Olympic Channel: Home of Team USA and NBCSN.

Rowing really caters to drones because you're not flying over any spectators, the drone is just over water the entire time, says Jon Ollwerther, VP, Media, Measure. It's also a very long course, which would be difficult to cover without a drone.
The DJI Inspire II system created HD broadcast quality video and features a micro 4/3 lens with full zoom capability. The system features 360 rotating gimbal and can go from 0 to 50mph in just 5 seconds and hits a maximum speed of 58mph. In addition to its primary unit, Measure brought along a secondary backup drone for redundancy.
The DJI Inspire II system's 20-plus-minute battery life allowed it to cover two races per battery cycle followed by a quick one-minute battery swap out, according to NEP. This allowed Measure to land and swap out batteries without missing any action on the water.
Some of the tools that have been used in the past for rowing, like cable-cams, are very effective, but they can be limiting because it just gives you one shot, says Ollwerther. When you're limited by other circumstances then it's a good tool, but when you have the space and the regulatory-approved environment to use a drone, it really is a better tool to get a wider variety of shots.

In addition to live race coverage, the production team used the drone to venue flyovers and beauty shots for bumpers and overarching views of the facility.

Measure had a three-person crew on-site at their operations area (located at the 1500-meter mark of the course): a drone pilot, a camera operator and a visual observer. Since this was Measure's first rowing production, the company opted to select a D1 rowing veteran from the University of Maryland as its visual observer.
We were happy to have her along because she was really able to lend insight into finding the important images, what was going on in each race, and what we needed to be looking at, says Ollwerther. As the event progressed, the pilot and the camera operator very quickly began to understand what needed to happen. In addition to a full setup and rehearsal day, they also do their leg work ahead of time watching hours and hours of rowing broadcasts.
The Measure crew wasn't the only group learning on the fly, however. The production team inside the truck also grew more accustomed to integrating drone shots into the live cut as the production progressed.

Since this was a relatively new tool for this production team, we decided that a crawl, walk, run approach was best so that they could exercise with the tool and understand it better.
At the beginning of the production, the Measure team kept the drone reasonably far away from the action on the water, primarily providing scenic aerials, establishing shots, and high-wide angle overviews of each race. By the end of four days, the drone was much closer to the action, creating tighter shots of each race.
It wasn't a hindrance or an annoyance to the athletes by any means; it didn't bother them in the least, says Ollwerther. And we were providing really scenic overview aerials and bump shots into and out of the show and commercials. By the end, we were providing much tighter coverage of each race, which is where the tool really excels.
Ollwerther adds: The feedback was stellar from the clients. The director was thrilled and said that this was hands down the best drone team he's ever worked with.
