Special attention is given to the development of GPON technology recognized as another cycle of network evolution, since it suggests the use of last-mile fiber-optic connections. It means that the subscriber's premises are connected over the fiber not copper cable. In this case the subscriber is provided with the entire resource of optic cable that is brought directly to the subscriber, thus it is not divided equally between other connected users. This opens up a range of new opportunities for customers.

Firstly, the technology enables Internet access at high speeds up to 2.5 Gbps in the downstream direction, whereas maximum speed for the basic adsl technology is only 8 Mbps.

Secondly, the new technology enables the so-called multi-service access providing a subscriber with a set of core services (telephony, Internet access and TV services) over a single fiber. Employment of the new technology also allows more flexibility when connecting to ZALA TV services: GPON enables connection of several TV receivers in an apartment or an office to interactive television.

And finally, the key advantage of GPON is stable quality of services. Advantage of GPON in comparison with thernet technology is that the former does not require the use of active equipment on-site, all devices are located on the operator's sites, which means higher protection and stable operation.

Nowadays a large number of shopping centers and residential complexes are connected by means of GPON technology. It is also worth noting that the new technology is implemented extensively not only in newly erected buildings but also in the existing ones; a planned network upgrade is conducted with replacement of copper lines to fiber in Minsk and throughout the country.

It should also be noted that within the framework of the 20th International Specialized Exhibition and Congress Tibo-2013 Beltelecom demonstrated the visitors of the forum the capabilities of GPON technology.
