Shutterstock, a leading provider of high-quality stock footage, recently supplied filmmaker Stephen Vittoria with a variety of footage for the company's long-term client SAGE Publications. Over the past ten years, Vittoria and his Los Angeles-based Deep Image Productions have produced several short films they call image pieces , that focus on SAGE's history as an academic publisher.
These narratives define the history, mission, execution, and vision of the company's business model, Vittoria explains. It is also about the future of the publishing industry, from their perspective. That future changes constantly with all the new technologies affecting the publishing business, says Vittoria.
The concept is to give the viewer an understanding of academic publishing', and the published works by academics, professors, and the educational community. It's the author's scholarship, the years of research and teaching, that we often focus on, he explains. To give the audience an intriguing look at the passion behind publishing this great scholarship, I need a stock footage house that can offer a wide array of quality stock, covering numerous conceptual ideas and locations, since SAGE has offices and partners all over the world. As with our other clients' projects, Shutterstock has come through for us once again.
For Vittoria, the wide variety and range of footage is a plus. The SAGE narrative requires a good amount of conceptual imagery to help tell their stories, he says. It's not always hard and fast. Education and the dissemination of knowledge needs more esoteric visuals and Shutterstock's search engine helps to pinpoint those gray areas.
For a recent SAGE project, Vittoria knew that finding obscure or hard to handle concepts was difficult. There were numerous areas in the script where the dialogue from interviews or voice-overs required visuals that supported the story and flow but were hard to target as to specifics. For example, we needed footage that defined the long-range effects of education and knowledge on a democratic society. Shutterstock offered some great high-end conceptual moments that really enhanced the narrative - visuals that were unexpected and therefore very creative. As an editor/producer, it's gratifying when that happens - and throughout this ongoing image project that happens a lot.
Ben Pfeiffer, VP of new business at Shutterstock, says, Our footage contributors amaze us every day with their truly inspired work. When an education leader like SAGE embraces these points of view, and sees the value and creative passion that goes into our collection, its the best of both worlds.
Vittoria has been a big fan of Shutterstock's ever-growing library of stock footage for quite a while. According to him, stock footage is one of the biggest tools in a documentary filmmaker's arsenal. Travel is always a number one item in a documentary budget, he explains. Having a really solid stock footage company like Shutterstock to rely on is a big deal. It allows the filmmaker to go to numerous locations that would cost a significant amount of money. All without leaving the office.
And when you are in the editing bay under pressure, and you need an image to flesh out a story, there is no opportunity to go out and get it. Shutterstock offers you the world - right there from your seat. Add to that, the quality of shooters, the company's conservative pricing, and their easy to use search engine-and it's easy to understand why we're always relying on Shutterstock to help us make high quality product within our budget.
Vittoria used over 50 pieces of footage from Shutterstock for the latest seven-minute piece for SAGE. The finished product will again become the premiere marketing visual for this publishing company. It can be seen online, at live events, and used with the SAGE promotional DVDs.
