Toshiba Ships First Make-in-India Super-critical Steam Turbine Generator from Chennai Facility

The 800-megawatt steam turbine and generator (STG) for Unit 2 of the Kudgi Super-critical Thermal Power Station

TOKYO Toshiba Corporation's Indian subsidiary for the power systems business, Toshiba JSW Power Systems Private Ltd. (Toshiba JSW), today announced that the company has marked a major advance in its continuing program to offer customers state-of-the-art power generations solutions: shipment of its first made-in-India steam turbine generator for Unit 2 of the Kudgi Coal-fired Super-critical Thermal Power Station in Karnataka state in south-west India. The 800-megawatt unit is the company's first large-scale generation system to be manufactured and assembled with locally procured parts and systems, and tested in India.

The shipping of the first Made-in-India' steam turbine and generator (STG) from Toshiba JSW was warmly welcomed by Mr. Yoshiaki Inayama, Managing Director of the company: We established Toshiba JSW with the goal of creating a company able to manufacture world-class STG, and we have now developed the capabilities required to supply large-scale turbine generators. We took this STG through every stage of manufacturing, from procurement to testing, and now it has shipped. We are now moving forward with our work for other projects.

In February 2012, Toshiba Group received an order for three 800MW steam turbine and generator island packages for the Kudgi Super-critical Thermal Power Station in Karnataka state from NTPC, Indias largest state-owned energy service provider. Toshiba Corporation fulfilled the first part of the order, and Kudgi 2 and 3 have been made by Toshiba JSW in Chennai. Toshiba JSW continues to work on STG for Meja Units 1 and 2 and Darlipali Units 1 and 2, and on an Ultra-Super-critical STG for Harduaganj.

Rapid economic growth is making increasing demands on India's strained power infrastructure. Under the government's Twelfth Five Year Plan for 2012 to 2017, generating capacity will be boosted at an average annual rate of 17.7MGW, with 80% of the increase in thermal power generation. Toshiba JSW will seek to support these efforts by delivering advanced STG that offer high level operating efficiency.

Toshiba's Energy Systems & Solutions Company will continue to reinforce and expand its thermal power business in India, and also build up a strategic base for exports to neighboring countries.
