Doreen Ringer-Ross, vice president creative for film, TV and visual media at BMI (Broadcast Music Inc.), returned to Berklee to celebrate the 20th anniversary of BMI Day on November 5. She came with two-time Emmy Award-winning composer Trevor Morris to present this year's Film Scoring scholarship to student composer Noa Beazley.
The first BMI-sponsored Film Scoring scholarship was presented in 1998 by composer Michael Kamen. It is awarded each year to a student selected by Berklee's Film Scoring Department based on the student's musical ability, financial need, and potential for career success.
The purpose of this scholarship is to support emerging composers at the college level by taking away some of the financial burdens associated with higher education, so recipients can focus on creating music, said Ringer-Ross. Berklee has one of the most prestigious Film Scoring undergraduate programs in the world. For more than 20 years, we've supported their commitment to the growth of talented, trained, and educated composers. We're thrilled that such an esteemed composer as Trevor Morris could present the scholarship to such a deserving young composer.
The Film Scoring Department is grateful to BMI for supporting our students over the past two decades, said Alison Plante, chair of Berklee's Film Scoring Department. Thus far, the BMI Scholarship has contributed a total of $100,000 toward students educations and furthered their chances for career success.
Born in Tel Aviv, Israel, to musician parents - a violist and clarinetist - Beazley was immersed in orchestral music from a young age, and she credits her sister for her passion for film scores. She attended a Berklee Global Partner institution, the Rimon School of Music, in Ramat Hasharon before coming to Boston. Within her first two years at Berklee, her diverse skill set earned her accolades including the Video Game Audio Scholarship for Women, the Rick Applin Award for best fugue, and the Jeronimas Kacinskas Award for outstanding composition.
In her application letter, Beazley stated that her future career plans lie entirely in the field of film and video game scoring, and that Berklee has provided her with the knowledge, skill and preliminary list of contacts to help her down that path. It is a tremendous honor to have been selected for this award, she said.
This year's BMI composer honoree Trevor Morris's credits include music scored for films such as London Has Fallen, Olympus Has Fallen, Immortals, and SOMM 3, as well as work on TV shows including The Tudors, The Borgias, and Vikings. His latest feature film, Hunter Killer, starring Gary Oldman and Gerard Butler, debuted on October 26.
In addition to the scholarship presentation, Morris conducted a demonstration scoring session, delivered a keynote address, and participated in a conversation with Ringer-Ross during the Film Scoring Senior Seminar.
