The River actor and TV presenter Lawrence Maleka, who plays the role of Zolani in the 1Magic telenovela has scooped several awards as both a presenter and actor.

The Big Brother Mzansi TV presenter also recently scored a DStv Mzansi Viewers Choice Award (DMVCAs) which he was hosting.

-- LAWRENCE MALEKA: I WAS DUMBSTRUCK' The actor-presenter Lawrence Maleka scooped the favourite TV presenter and ultimate viewers' choice awards last month (June) and previously scored a SAFTA for his popular role as Zolani in The River.

The TV presenter tells Channel24 about winning the recent award:

I'm so glad there were no cameras behind there because I was dumbstruck, he says. I was essentially at work, working, so it was a mission to get me back on stage.

He adds that he was in complete disbelief when his name was called and that it was even crazier.

I've always said that the public is the people I work for. I work for the public, and I'll be on television for as long as the public deem me fit to work.

Maleka says he's always been drawn to the arts, but that the final push was his mother.

I was flipping through channels once, and my mom said something that stayed with me for a very long time, Maleka says. I saw there's nothing to watch, and my mom said there's nothing to watch because you're not on it. It was profuse, but I was running with it.

THE RIVER' ACTOR: I LOVE TALENT' The River actor says he's an industry thief and loves talent because talent is a form.

I'm an industry thief. I love talent, talent in every form, he says. The people I work with, the people I secretly look at, borrow from, and try to incorporate into my own genre and style.

Maleka also credits his career highlights to everyone he's worked with as his best job is his next.

I always say my best job is my next job, so everything I get to do, every one I get to work with is a career highlight - no matter what the experience has been.

If you can wake up every day and say, given the infrastructure and the resources, this is what I would do for the rest of my life without a pay cheque, then definitely.

To anyone aspiring to go into the industry, I'd say learn the business and then aspire to be in front of the camera. There's so much more that you could do - learn the business, be in love with it and be naturally inquisitive, and don't take sides.
