As reported by Lauren Isaacs from Eyewitness News, Kuliswa Nondala was gunned down at her home in the TR Section informal settlement over the weekend.
Nondala's boyfriend was with her when she was attacked, and his cellphone was stolen. The motive for the killing is not yet known at this stage. However, two men broke into the EFF activist's home last week and stole a plasma television.
According to Citizen, Nondala was shot in the upper body and was declared dead on the scene. Authorities are still investigating, and it's not clear if the incidents are connected.
Ndithini Tyhido from the Khayelitsha Development Forum told EWN that Nondala was smart, feisty, and energetic, and that she fought for her community. Tyhido added:
I've had interactions with Kuliswa on matters that affected the community, such as the issue of crime in the TR Section. It is quite sad that people like her are the ones who are targeted by these criminals in our communities.
Nondala's friend and fellow activist, Mbulelo Dwane, said on Facebook that Ward 90 will never be the same without [Nondala's] energetic soul, and added:
We must, as this generation, find our purpose fulfil or betray it, at minimum, we must find it, and deeply reflect what type of society we want to hand over to the next generation. Rest in eternal power joni, Economic Freedom Fighter, Fearless Woman, Mbokodo.
Siwaphiwe Khab'ibhulu Mpandla described the EFF activist as a revolutionary, a fighter with love, a clear ground force and a soul saver, saying:
Nondala stood the test of time and remained a true fighter. She died with her boots ON! May your soul rest in revolutionary peace, my leader.
