A master class on film at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim

Alternating between career highlights and tips about his acting method, Harvey Keitel enraptured the audience during a casual talk at Casa de Cultura Laura Alvim this past Friday, 12/6. Star of such films as Taxi Driver, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and The Piano, Keitel was in Rio to shoot his part in the Rio Eu Te Amo feature. He chatted with an audience of mostly film and theater students. Filmmaker Cac Diegues and Conspira o Filmes producer Leonardo Monteiro de Barros moderated.

Conspira o Filmes produces the feature, which is the carioca chapter in the Cities of Love series, a franchise that goes beyond the actual films to bring additional benefits to the city that is being portrayed, as Leonardo describes: When we decided to invite Harvey Keitel for the picture we made sure to invite him for this meeting with carioca students as well. Besides the tourism benefits that a picture like this brings to the city, Rio gains a lot more, with events like these, for instance. The students had an opportunity to attend a presentation by one of the world s greatest film actors and, more importantly, were able to ask him questions. Plus, Rio now benefits from a man of Keitel s stature telling his colleagues all over the world about Brazilian film students and their avid interest in motion pictures. That motivates other stars to come here , says the producer.

After a short introduction, during which the actor immediately showed his good mood as soon as he stepped onstage he asked where the drinks were , Harvey took questions from the audience. Besides offering fun tidbits about his work with greats like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, Keitel gave the students tips, reminding them that there is no hierarchy among actors working in different mediums. Students at the Actors Studio learn how to put together a character from A to Z. we don t prepare film actors, we prepare actors , he said, mentioning the world-renowned New York Actors Studio, which he represents.

Keitel, who has an Academy Award nomination under his belt for his work in Bugsy, charmed the audience with his casual, unaffected stance. In my opinion the most important lesson he gave was that an actor s fulfillment comes not from prizes or money, but from his total involvement with each character created, from the everlasting impact they generate , says Leonard Monteiro de Barros.
