Carlos Fontanot, Imagery Manager de la Estaci n Espacial Internacional (ISS), ha participado como speaker de honor en la 4K Summit 2017 a trav s de videoconferencia desde el Johnson Space Center en Houston. El reputado ingeniero de la NASA inici su intervenci n disculp ndose por no poder estar presente en M laga como era su deseo debido a un asunto familiar que le ha obligado a permanecer en Texas, aunque ha asegurado que espera poder acudir a la cumbre mundial de la Ultra Alta Definici n en la edici n del pr ximo a o.
Fontanot subray la importancia de la imagen en la actividad de la Estaci n Espacial Internacional y el descubrimiento del espacio. Desde la Estaci n en la que actualmente residen seis tripulantes se env an cada a o m s de 3,5 millones de fotos y miles de horas de v deo a trav s de seis canales HD que se emiten desde el espacio. Muchas de estas horas se capturan desde el espacio exterior mediante los cascos de los tripulantes para paseos espaciales que cuenta con dos c maras enlazadas por WiFi con la Estaci n. Tambi n disponen de tres c maras externas EHDC (en enero incorporar n otra m s) montadas sobre brazos rob ticos pan/tilt que transmiten a trav s de WiFi. Estas carcasas herm ticas alojan una c mara Nikon D4 modificada con un peque o motor para mover el zoom y una ptica Nikkor 28-300VR.
En el interior de la Estaci n, la tripulaci n cuenta con varios camcorders HD y una c mara 4K RED Epic Dragon. Para el env o de las grabaciones, las se ales se codifican y multiplexan en la Estaci n y mediante una antena en banda Ku a 300 mbps se lanza a una constelaci n de sat lite TDRSS y de ah a Tierra.
Fontanot destac que dado que la Estaci n orbita a 28.000 kil metros por hora y una altura de unos 400 kil metros completando una vuelta a la Tierra cada 92 minutos, la NASA cuenta con ventanas de apenas unos minutos para recibir se ales 4K muy robustas.
A bordo de la ISS, adem s de la RED Epic Dragon cuentan con varias GoPro Hero 3 (utilizadas para los paseos espaciales), diez Nikon D4, cinco Drift Ghost-S y una decena de camcorders (Canon XF-305).
4K con RED
Carlos Fontanot destac el importante papel que est jugando RED Digital Cinema en la captaci n de se ales 4K en la Estaci n Espacial. La NASA cuenta con una RED Epic Dragon desde 2015. Gracias al m dulo REDCAST es posible usar la c mara como fuente para un downlink en directo UHD. Fontanot record la conversaci n que mantuvo con Jarred Land, CEO de RED, en la que llegaron a la conclusi n que ser a una experiencia generial si pudi ramos colocar una c mara 4K en la Estaci n. R pidamente llegamos a un acuerdo para desplegar la RED Epic Dragon y pr ximamente contaremos con la c mara RED de 8K a principios de 2018 , asegur .
En cuanto a codificaci n, AWS Elemental dise un codificador customizado con baja emisi n de calor y consumo capaz de trabajar con cuatro salidas HD-SDI a 1080p a 29.97 fps.
Primera emisi n en directo 4K desde el espacio
Durante el pasado NAB en Las Vegas se llev a cabo la primera emisi n en directo en resoluci n 4K desde la Estaci n Espacial Internacional. Desde la ISS se enviaron a Tierra dos se ales; una en HD (con audio sincronizado) y otra en 4K sin audio. En el Centro Espacial Johnson se procedi a extraer el audio, ajustar el retardo de la se al de casi 4 segundos con respecto a la se al HD y embeberlo de nuevo en la se al 4K que se envi al Las Vegas Convention Center. En el sentido contrario, se capturaba audio y v deo en Las Vegas que se enviaban a Houston para hacer el uplink directo a la Estaci n.
Por ltimo, Fontanot record que la NASA cuenta con un canal 24/7 en 4K que emite diverso material procedente de la Estaci n, Hubble, transbordadores Un total de doce centros contribuyen con contenido a esta canal y tres de ellos se encargan de hacer el uplink al sat lite. Adem s la Agencia Espacial Estadounidense cuenta con cinco centros equipados para producir contenidos 4K.
