Sunday movie: Den of Thieves - what you need to know

M-Net's Sunday movie Den of Thieves was written, directed and produced by Christian Gudegast - he who brought us the action-packed London Has Fallen in 2016, and A Man Apart in 2003.

Even though Den of Thieves received mixed reviews, it made more than $80m at the box office, on a meagre budget of $30m. Believe it or not, but Den Of Thieves was in development for nearly 14 years due to a blind deal between Gudegast and Relativity Media, when the media company still had its doors open.

Nick Flanagan Den of Thieves Plot Nick O'Brien (Gerard Butler) is the leader of the Regulators, an elite unit of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. He works hard and he drinks hard. Ray Merrimen is the recently paroled leader of the Outlaws, a gang of ex-military men who use their expertise and tactical skills to evade the law.

Both men and their crews cross paths with a group criminals out to hatch an elaborate plan for a seemingly impossible heist - the city's Federal Reserve Bank.

Jeffrey M Anderson from Common Sense Media feels that Den Of Thieves is long, dull and repetitive, while James White from Empire says it disappoints with its reliance on plotting and gruff, despite having a few slick and solid moments.

Owen Gleiberman from Variety was a bit nicer, only a little bit, and said the relatively elaborate heist thriller at least appears to have something on its mind.
