Boy Scouts Honor Jim Goodmon with Lifetime Achievement Award

The Occoneechee Council of the Boy Scouts of America recently honored CBC President & CEO Jim Goodmon with its NC Good Scout Lifetime Achievement Award. Goodmon received the recognition at the 2017 Friends of Scouting Breakfast, held at the North Raleigh Hilton on Friday, March 3.

It was a reminder of the positive role Boy Scouts continue to play in the lives of our young men, said WRAL-TV Anchor/Reporter Ken Smith of the breakfast. He helped represent CBC at the event. I was proud to be associated with one of the Scouts longest running Explorer programs, Post 5 and Post 50.

Goodmon and Capitol Broadcasting have been associated with the Boy Scouts since 1969, hosting Explorer Post 5 at WRAL-TV and later adding Explorer Post 50 at the Durham Bulls. Goodmon chartered Post 5 along with WRAL-TV engineer Powell Kidd.

WRAL Explorer Post 5 offers members the opportunity to learn all aspects of television broadcasting, from reporting and anchoring to producing newscasts and shooting local productions. Members will hear and learn from award-winning professionals at WRAL through clinics and workshops as well as get hands-on experience by participating in our job shadowing program.

Post 5 is regarded as the second oldest Explorer Post in the nation. In its 46 years, Post 5 has introduced hundreds of youths to the field of broadcasting and has seen many members go on to successful careers in the television industry.

The students of Explorer 50 have been producing a closed-circuit broadcast for Bulls' home games since 1999. In the 2001 season, the Bulls and FOX 50 expanded the program to broadcast 32 home games on WRAZ-DT, FOX 50's digital channel. Explorer Post 50 were nominated for a Student Production Emmy by the Midsouth Region for their work in producing Bulls games that inaugural year.

Exploring, part of Learning for Life - a subsidiary of the Boy Scouts of America - is a unique partnership between local businesses and organizations to bring real-world, hand-on experiences in a wide variety of career fields.

Steve Logan, former ECU football head coach and NFL coach, provided the keynote for the 2017 Friends of Scouting Breakfast. Last fall he revived his weekly The Logan Zone for WRAL-TV and WRALSportsFan.com, as well as talking both college and professional football on CBC Sports Radio stations 99.9 The Fan and Buzz Sports Radio.

CS' George Habel & WRAL-TV's Loretta Harper-Arnold help represent CBC at the 2017 Friends of Scouting Breakfast.

Coach Steve Logan's speech about leadership was engaging and poignant, said Smith. I hope to apply the leadership qualities he talked about in my own life. If you hear of Coach Logan being the key note speaker for an event, don't miss it. I hope this helps.

WRAL-TV Chief Meteorologist Greg Fishel served as emcee for the morning event.

The Boy Scouts of America do great work, and we are all proud to be supporters through Explorer Post 5 and Explorer Post 50, said CBC Vice President of Real Estate Michael Goodmon, who attended the event to see his father receive the award.
