By Antonio Russu, Global Head of Cyber Security
25 March 2025 When you think about the omnipresent cyber threats today and how it affects companies across all industries, a lot of parallels can be drawn with the COVID-19 pandemic. We are living, in what can be defined as, the Permanent Digital Pandemic. Just as we adapted our behaviours to combat a biological virus, we must now evolve our digital practices to confront an ever-present cyber threat landscape.
The parallels between COVID-19 and cyber security The comparison between the COVID-19 pandemic and our current cybersecurity challenges is striking. Both threats are persistent, evolving, and require a fundamental shift in our daily behaviours to mitigate risks. Just as we accepted that COVID-19 would not simply disappear overnight, we must acknowledge that cyber threats are here to stay.
Accepting the new normal
Companies must abandon the search for a silver bullet solution and instead have constant vigilance and adaptation. This shift involves:
Continuous education and awareness training
Regular security assessments and updates
Implementing a multi-layered security approach
The staggering scale of cyber threat The scale of cyber threats is staggering, with cybercrime projected to inflict damages of $10.5 trillion by 2025, making it a significant economic force rivalling the world's largest economies. This industry's immense size underscores the critical need for robust cyber security measures. Cyber-attacks occur over 2,200 times daily, with financial institutions and healthcare sectors being prime targets. Emerging threats include AI-powered malware, deepfake fraud, and IoT-based attacks, which require advanced security technologies like AI-driven tools and Zero Trust Architecture. The rapid growth and sophistication of cyber threats demand a comprehensive approach, including international cooperation and improved regulatory frameworks to combat these borderless threats effectively.
Growth Trends in Cyber Attacks The growth trends in cyberattacks have reached unprecedented levels, with both frequency and sophistication escalating across industries. Ransomware attacks surged by 82% from January 2024 to January 2025, with 510 global victims reported in the first month of 2025 alone. The healthcare sector remains a prime target, experiencing 458 ransomware attacks in 2024, and continues to face threats such as AI-enabled phishing and supply chain vulnerabilities. Phishing incidents rose by over 58% in 2023, while DDoS attacks increased by 13% in early 2024, with over 8 million incidents recorded. Emerging threats like AI-powered scams and quantum-enabled cyberattacks further complicate the landscape, highlighting the urgent need for robust cyber security strategies and international collaboration to counteract these rapidly evolving dangers.
Adapting to the Permanent Digital Pandemic To navigate the permanent digital pandemic, organisations must adapt by implementing a multi-faceted approach to cybersecurity. This includes deploying comprehensive security measures that utilize a variety of tools and strategies, recognizing that no single solution provides complete protection.
Fostering a security-first culture is crucial, encouraging all employees to be vigilant and proactive in identifying and reporting potential threats. Staying informed about the latest cybersecurity trends and emerging threats is essential for anticipating and preparing for new attack vectors. Companies should also invest in AI and machine learning technologies to enhance their threat detection and response capabilities. Additionally, addressing supply chain vulnerabilities is critical, as 54% of large organisations cite these challenges as the biggest barrier to cyber resilience. By adopting these strategies, organisations can better position themselves to face the ongoing and evolving cyber threats in today's digital world.
The Permanent Digital Pandemic is our new reality. By accepting this fact and adapting our behaviours and strategies accordingly, we can build resilience against the ever-evolving cyber threats. Just as we learned to live with COVID-19, we must now learn to thrive in a world where digital threats are a constant presence.
Finding one-time-solutions doesn't work anymore. We need to change to a culture of continuous monitoring security and adapting with speed and integrity.
