Everything old was new again at the 66th Emmy Awards, where last year's victor Breaking Bad swept the dramatic categories and Modern Family tied Frasier s record for most wins amongst comedies.
Breaking Bad s coronation came almost a full year after its final season aired; a delay that many felt would lead to HBO's upstart True Detective taking top honours.
But at a ceremony hosted by Seth Meyers, the Emmys could not deny a final chance to honour show creator Vince Gilligan with another Outstanding Drama Series Emmy, nor its stars, Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, and Aaron Paul. Cranston can now boast of six Emmys (four times as Outstanding Lead Actor, twice as producer of an Outstanding Drama Series), not to mention a passionate on-stage kiss with Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
Gunn, meanwhile, has two to her name in the Outstanding Supporting Actress field, while Paul has three (as well as the record for most ever wins in the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series category).
Another prior winner, Julianna Margulies, was named Outstanding Lead Actress for The Good Wife in its critically acclaimed fifth season.
Though Breaking Bad missed out in the Direction competition losing to Cary Joji Fukunaga for True Detective - Moira Walley-Beckett did collect the Emmy for Outstanding Writing with her script to the show's emotional climax, Ozymandias'.
Modern Family took the Outstanding Comedy Series crown for a fifth year running, along with prizes for Ty Burrell as Outstanding Supporting Actor and Gail Mancuso, for directing the farcical Vegas' episode.
Jim Parsons collected his fourth Emmy as Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for his work in The Big Bang Theory, while Louis-Dreyfus earned her third Outstanding Actress Emmy for Veep. It is her fifth Emmy in total.
Allison Janney earned her sixth career Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Mom, while Louis C.K. also added to his mantle a fourth writing Emmy, this time for the Louie episode So Did the Fat Lady'.
Over in the Miniseries or Movie categories, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman were named Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor for Sherlock: His Final Vow, while Freeman's other show, Fargo, was awarded Outstanding Miniseries. Though Fargo entered the night the most nominated miniseries, it only walked away with one other, for direction.
Outstanding Made for TV Movie went to HBO's The Normal Heart, a star-studded affair that went otherwise unrewarded.
Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates collected Outstanding Actress and Supporting Actress accolades for American Horror Story: Coven, respectively.
The Colbert Report was named Outstanding Variety Series for a second year running, while The Amazing Race won its tenth trophy for Outstanding Reality Show.
