SMPTE celebrates one hundred years as referenceThe Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) celebrates its centenary with various commemorative events.

The SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers), society of engineers dedicated to the standardization of processes within the film, television and radio which aims to improve interoperability and ensure standardization between different systems and equipment, this year celebrates its centenary.

With more than 6,000 members is an of the entities of reference both in United States as in all the world to level technical and scientific in it industry audiovisual. This organization has served as a guide for the whole industry throughout a century in establishing standards and patterns.

Founded in 1916 in Washington as SMPE (society of engineers of image in movement) by Paul Brockett, Herbert thousands, Donald J. Bell, Paul H. Cromelin, C.A. Willatt, Francis B. Cannock, W. Burton Westcott, E. Kendall Gillett, J.P. Lyons and especially by the inventor C. Francis Jenkins, one of them pioneers in the film and in the development of the television, charged in 1928 of the first retransmission of television of the history.

Since then he has published more than 800 standards and protocols, playing a decisive role in the development and dissemination of television and telecommunications in the United States, achieving at the same time a powerful impact on the audiovisual market globally.

During the 1950s his important role in the expansion of television led to the old SMPE has add a "T" to its acronym, moving thereafter to be known with its SMPTE name.

The different contributions to the industry include the creation of the characteristic pattern of bars, SMPTE, the most widespread in countries that have the NTSC as the television standard.

With the development of the video and rear appearance of formats digital, apart from its important achievements in the cinema and the television, has followed developing standards for the UHD and the 4 and 8 K as well as for them emissions of high technology in HDR (High Dynamic Range) and HFR (High Frame Rate).

Events commemorative

He last Friday 22 gave start them acts of commemoration of the Foundation of the SMPTE. In honor of the founders day, the Executive Director, Barbara Lange, sounded the the closing bell of the Nasdaq in the Time Square while the Centennial-related images projected on the famous giant screens.

On 10 August they will mark exactly one hundred years of the Foundation and society devoted a special issue to this day in its monthly magazine (SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal). In addition, the annual Conference of the SMPTE, which will take place in Hollywood from 24 to 28 October, will feature a display of the inventions of C. Francis Jenkins that will take place at the Wayne County Historical Museum. The Conference will close with a gala at the Ray Dolby Ballroom.
