Tamborine expands audio at MediaCityUK

Audio and music facility Tamborine Productions is consolidating its new presence at MediaCityUK with plans for permanent staff at the Salford site. Tamborine opened a mix room and voice booth towards the end of last year in The Landing area of main studios building of MediaCityUK, which is operated by dock10. The new operation is based round Pro Tools HD and a 24-fader D-Command console, with Dynaudio 5.1 monitoring. According to Tamborines managing director and senior engineer, Nick Harris, this set-up "consolidates what we are doing in London".

Established in Soho in 1997, with Harris joining in 2001 and taking joint ownership nine years later, Tamborine specialises in voice and music recording for animated series, particularly for childrens TV, live action programming, including reality documentaries.

Harris explains that part of the reason for expanding into the northwest of England was the heritage the area has in animation. "There are voice artists based up there so we can do the recordings with them at MediaCityUK," he explains. Another factor was winning the contract to work on BBC CBeebies series Tree Fu Tom. "That went out to tender and part of the requirement was for it to be mixed in the northwest," Harris says, "so that accelerated the building of the new facility."

The Landing at dock10 was created to house independent production companies and facilities, with access to the studios at MediaCityUK. "Its a community feeling there and an exciting prospect," Harris comments.

Tamborine has taken 600 square feet of space at The Landing to house a mix room, voice booth and client area. The studios and acoustics were designed by Tamborines business director Roger Kelly, who is a chartered engineer and chairman of the Building Acoustics Group at the Institute of Acoustics.

Since opening, sessions at The Landing have been run by engineers from Tamborine in London. Harris says the company is talking to freelancers in the area and hopes to appointment permanent staff early this year.
