AfriDocs presents the official African broadcast premiere of the BAFTA and Academy Award nominated Virunga in all 49 countries across sub-Saharan Africa.
From Netflix Originals and executive producer, Leonardo DiCaprio, feature documentary Virunga has won over 40 international awards since its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014.
Virunga will air at 20h00 (CAT) on 21 May 2015 on DSTV ED satellite channel 190 and terrestrially on GOtv channel 65. The incredible true story of a group of brave people risking their lives to build a better future in eastern Congo, Virunga is a gripping depiction of the realities of life in the region.
The film features as yet unresolved allegations about London based FTSE 250 oil company SOCO International, whose illegal exploration for oil within World Heritage Site, Virunga National Park, is threatening one of the world s most unique and bio-diverse habitats; home to the last remaining
mountain gorillas.
In this wild, but enchanted environment, a small and embattled team of park rangers including an ex-child soldier turned ranger, a caretaker of orphan gorillas and a dedicated conservationist protect this UNESCO world heritage site from armed militia, poachers and forces struggling to
control Congos rich natural resources.
Following the AfriDocs broadcast there will be a series of public and private screenings in a number of African cities including Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Nairobi, Bujumbura, Mayotte and Goma.
