SCTE HONORS EXCELLENCE WITH AWARDS AT SCTE CABLE-TEC EXPO 2013
OCT. 22, 2013 (Atlanta, GA) The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) has presented a number of prestigious awards during the first two days of its flagship event, SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013, which got underway Monday and continues through this Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta.
The SCTE Member of the Year Award was presented to Steve Murphy, senior manager, compliance, with Comcast Cable Communications in Englewood, Colo. The award recognizes the SCTE member who has made the most significant contributions to the Society through active participation in its programs and efforts during the past year. Murphy has distinguished himself by excelling in his role as treasurer for his local chapter, the SCTE Rocky Mountain Chapter, and as an active member of the finance committee. His pioneering chapter budget-planning efforts and successful management of the Rocky Mountain Chapter's annual vendor symposium have served as a model for SCTE's other chapters.
The SCTE Hall of Fame named Rick Sullivan as its inductee for 2013. An industry veteran with more than 30 years of experience and an SCTE member since 1995, Sullivan, of Omaha, Neb., is an account manager with Time Fiber Communications/Amphenol. He is the Regional Representative for SCTE Region 5 and a member of the SCTE Board of Directors. A past chair of the SCTE Professional Development Committee, Sullivan's longtime advocacy of SCTE training and professional development programs has led many individuals to improve themselves through chapter events and technical training courses.
Outgoing SCTE Chairman of the Board Mike LaJoie of Time Warner Cable selected Jim Hughes of CommScope as the recipient of this year's SCTE Chairman's Award. Hughes is a member of the SCTE Board of Directors, for which he is the newly elected secretary, and is senior vice president, global broadband sales, with CommScope. The annual Chairman's Award is presented to an individual, group, or organization that has demonstrated significant support of the Society and its mission. Hughes, who also serves the SCTE Foundation as a member of its board of directors, earned LaJoie's selection for this year's award for his work as a tireless volunteer who has been a true advocate of SCTE within his company and a strategic thinker who has earned the respect of the MSO and vendor communities.
Each year, a contributor to technical standards development within the ANSI-accredited SCTE Standards Program is awarded with the SCTE Excellence in Standards Award. This year's honoree is Bryan Santangelo, who is vice president of software architecture at This Technology Inc. in Denver. Santangelo chaired the SCTE Digital Video Subcommittee DVS629 drafting group that was responsible for the documents that became the SCTE 130 suite of advanced advertising standards.
Two industry professionals have gained the spotlight at Expo 2013 as the newest SCTE Senior Members. They are Tim Cooke of Times Fiber Communications and Gary Ervin of Ervin Cable Construction. SCTE Senior Membership status recognizes their technical competence, active participation in Society and industry affairs, and high standards of professionalism.
The Gold and Silver SCTE Safety Awards were presented this year to a number of industry organizations each of them having achieved an outstanding level of safety during 2012 based on OSHA recordable incident rates. The list of these outstanding achievers is accessible at http://www.scte.org/membership/Safety_Award_Winners.aspx.
Expo 2013 also provided the setting for the presentation of the annual Women in Technology Award. This year's honoree is Stephanie Mitchko-Beale, senior vice president, video infrastructure software, with Cablevision Systems in Woodbury, N.Y. The award is made possible through the joint efforts of SCTE, Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT), and CableFAX and is sponsored by Bright House Networks. With more than 20 years of experience, this outstanding SCTE member is a technology, television, and interactive advertising veteran with a strong record of first-to-market, industry-leading products including developing Cablevision's Multi-Room DVR (cloud-based DVR service) system.
SCTE bestowed each of these honors in one of several Expo venues this week the SCTE Annual Membership Meeting on Monday, and the Opening General Session and the Annual Awards Luncheon, both of which were conducted today.
