WRAL-TV Brain Game Producer Randy Mews Wraps Season Taping Before Retirement

Final 2024 Season Games to Air Saturdays on WRAL at 10:30am in May, Championship on June 1

Taping for the final episodes of the 2024 season of WRAL-TV's Brain Game took place on Saturday, April 27, and with it, the end of an era. Current Brain Game Producer Randy Mews will retire in June after almost three decades with the station.

Mews and his team produce 27 original Brain Game shows per season that air from November through the end of the school year.

Taping for the final three episodes of the 2023-2024 season of WRAL-TV's Brain Game took place on Saturday, April 27, at Wake Technical Community College. The taping day was the last for Brain Game Producer Randy Mews (center), who will retire in June, after almost three decades at WRAL.

Five episodes remain this season. They air Saturdays at 10:30am on WRAL immediately following the morning news. The repeats air at different times on WRAL, WRAZ and WNGT.

The 2024 championship game will air on Saturday, June 1 at 10:30am on WRAL.

This season is Mews' sixth as the producer of Brain Game. He followed in the footsteps of Brain Game creator Kevin Shand, who produced what became known as the smartest half-hour on television for over two decades. During Shand's tenure with the show, Mews helped out, though not in an official capacity. He is proud to have been tapped to step up to lead the show.

My favorite thing about Brain Game has been collaborating with an extremely talented group of people, said Mews. My co-workers at WRAL are the best in the business, we have two excellent judges (Eric & Seth), and Mark Roberts is a fabulous game show host and very entertaining.

Mews rounds out his Brain Game production career with gratitude for the team around him.

I also want to recognize the players, our Brainiacs, he said. What an engaged, gifted, smart group of students. They are our future leaders. Finally, thanks to Wake Tech for being our partner. We couldn't do Brain Game without them.

Wrapping up his Capitol Broadcasting career with the Brain Game felt fitting for Mews.

I've been at WRAL for almost 30 years and have worked in broadcasting for 40 years, he told the Brain Game crew. I'm leaving the business with a lot of great memories. Most importantly, I've had the privilege of working with so many outstanding people along the way, especially during my time at WRAL.
