The Rising Wave of Internet Traffic in Times of the Coronavirus Al examinar el tr fico por pa ses, comprobamos que las preocupaciones regionales sobre el COVID-19, y la implementaci n de protocolos de aislamiento, han tenido un impacto significativo en los niveles de tr fico.
El nuevo coronavirus, y la resultante enfermedad respiratoria viral causada por l, COVID-19, est cambiando nuestra sociedad. En la medida de lo posible, la gente de todo el mundo est practicando el distanciamiento social. Esto significa teletrabajo para un gran n mero de personas, posiblemente por primera vez en sus vidas. Seg n nuestros datos, estos cambios llevaron a un crecimiento del 30% en el tr fico de Internet en marzo, provocando que muchas personas se preguntaran si la propia Web se iba a caer . La respuesta r pida es no.
Tom Leighton, CEO de Akamai, destaca que gestionamos nuestra plataforma inteligente en el Edge, distribuida globalmente con m s de 270.000 servidores en 4.000 ubicaciones en 137 pa ses. Desde esta posici n estrat gica, podemos ver que el tr fico global de Internet aument alrededor de un 30% durante el mes pasado. Eso es aproximadamente 10 veces m s de lo habitual, y significa que hemos visto el crecimiento del tr fico de internet de todo un a o, en tan s lo unas semanas. Y eso sin ninguna retransmisi n de deportes en vivo, que siempre registraban r cords de tr fico antes de COVID-19.
Actualmente, los responsables de la mayor parte del crecimiento del tr fico est n siendo el streaming de v deo y la descarga de software .
Al examinar el tr fico por pa ses, comprobamos que las preocupaciones regionales sobre el COVID-19, y la implementaci n de protocolos de aislamiento, han tenido un impacto significativo en los niveles de tr fico. As como el aumento de los diferentes tipos de tr fico afecta globalmente, los cambios en cada pa s pueden afectar tanto al tr fico local como al regional.
El crecimiento explosivo de marzo es impresionante, y s lo el futuro dir si seguimos viendo un crecimiento similar. Las compa as de medios de comunicaci n est n tomando medidas para reducir su tr fico, adoptando la definici n est ndar de streaming. Akamai est trabajando con socios, como Sony and Microsoft, para limitar el impacto de las actualizaciones para juegos y otras descargas de software utilizando horas de menor demanda para las descargas. Habr desaf os provocados por el repentino crecimiento del tr fico, pero somos buenos para adaptarnos al cambio.
Analizamos el impacto que los protocolos de aislamiento han tenido en el consumo de Internet en distintos pa ses.
Mirando el tr fico en Espa a en torno a la fecha de aislamiento, podemos afirmar la relaci n entre los protocolos de aislamiento y el uso del ancho de banda. No hubo eventos significativos a nivel mundial cerca de la orden de aislamiento del 14 de marzo de 2020 en Espa a, lo que significa que el aumento de casi 120% del tr fico estaba casi seguro relacionado con las medidas tomadas por el gobierno. En la mayor a de las reas, el tr fico de fin de semana est significativamente reducido, lo que resalta a n m s el marcado crecimiento que vemos en este gr fico.
Afortunadamente, estamos viendo que la demanda inicial se reduce, ya que las actualizaciones de los juegos se han trasladado a horas no pico y los servicios de streaming se entregan con una definici n est ndar. Al rondar el 20-30% por encima de la media de febrero, esta nueva normalidad supone un gran aumento en el tr fico de Espa a.
Uno de los factores positivos en el tr fico generado por las preocupaciones de la pandemia es que no se ha centrado en un solo marco temporal o servicio, a diferencia de un evento medi tico de streaming o el lanzamiento de un juego. Cuando varias regiones intentan descargar el mismo contenido al mismo tiempo, vemos c mo se ampl a el impacto de cualquier ralentizaci n. Por el contrario, debido a que el crecimiento del tr fico se reparte a lo largo del tiempo y el contenido de forma m s uniforme, Akamai, e Internet en su conjunto, han sido capaces de adaptarse a los cambios. El hecho de que estemos viendo que estas subidas llegan en oleadas, en lugar de todas al mismo tiempo, nos da la seguridad de que Internet seguir funcionando.
Respecto a Italia, este fue el primer pa s de la Uni n Europea que se aisl , y el crecimiento de su tr fico fue relativamente suave en comparaci n con muchos otros pa ses que analizamos. En el gr fico 2, vemos los niveles de tr fico por hora, mientras que la l nea nos muestra el nivel de tr fico medio diario del pa s.
En el transcurso de una semana, los niveles de tr fico diario de Italia crecieron r pidamente, alcanzando un m ximo el 14 de marzo con un 75% por encima de los niveles medios de tr fico de febrero. Desde entonces, ha retrocedido hasta que el tr fico del 3 de abril fue menos del 10% por encima de la media de febrero.
Esta oleada inicial de tr fico ha sido un factor com n en la mayor a de los pa ses que hemos examinado, as como un reflujo gradual del tr fico en las siguientes semanas. Lo que hace a Italia ligeramente diferente, es que el tr fico no comenz hasta despu s de que los protocolos de aislamiento entraron en vigor, pero parte de esto puede deberse a los patrones naturales de tr fico de fin de semana.
Otro ejemplo, es el de Polonia que puso en pr ctica protocolos de aislamiento el 13 de marzo de 2020, y sigui un patr n de tr fico que nos result familiar a medida que busc bamos en toda la regi n europea. Tres d as antes de que el pa s pusiera en marcha sus protocolos de aislamiento, podemos ver una fuerte inclinaci n en el uso de datos hacia Polonia, con un descenso gradual. Tal y como se muestra en el gr fico 3, el tr fico de Internet servido por Akamai a Polonia alcanz su punto m ximo el 14 de marzo de 2020, con un poco m s del 75% sobre los niveles de febrero, antes de retroceder a menos
