Filipe Toledo Talks Pipe Masters Prep

Tomorrow marks the opening day of the 2018 Billabong Pipe Masters, and with a building swell, the last stop of the WSL Championship Tour is looking to be a big one. The battle for the championship is currently led by Gabriel Medina in the yellow jersey, who is followed closely by GoPro surf athlete Filipe Toledo and Aussie Julian Wilson.

This puts Filipe in the perfect position to take home the big win, and going into opening day, the GoPro Brazil team caught up with him to see how he's prepping for Pipe. And put simply, he said he's taking it like all the stops leading up to here-one round at a time.

I want to position myself for the best waves and focus on one round at a time," Filipe said. "It's not good to think about final if I don't focus on making the first rounds. I am looking to have my best season in Hawaii. Being so far, fighting for the World Title, is a sign that Ive done my job well."

This is Filipe's best performance in the CT to-date and a great payoff to all the hard work we've seen him put in this year. Especially recently, as Filipe has been posted up on the North Shore since November to prepare himself.

I like to train here. I always want to get better at what I feel is difficult, and I'm sure that the time I put in each year will help me get better."

Not only has Filipe improved year over year, but Brazilian surfing as a whole is on the rise. In 2018, there are five Brazilians represented in the top 15-Medina, Filipe, talo Ferreira, William Cardoso and Michael Rodrigues. It's shaping up to be the best showing of Brazilian surfers since 2014.

Brazilian surf has developed itself a lot in the last years," Filipe says. "Our athletes have sought to understand judging criteria and perform according to it. I guess our generation has encouraged other generations to find their place in the tour, like how the past generation inspired me.

And with this success comes amazingly passionate Brazilian crowds across WSL events. Filipe says the energy is definitely contagious. [Brazilians] always cheer with passion and believe in us .

Pipe Masters will be no exception to this. We, along with many at home in Brazil, are cheering for you, Filipe!
