Sky News wins News Channel of the Year at the RTS Television Journalism Awards

Sky News won News Channel of the Year for a fifth consecutive year at last night's 2022 Royal Television Society Television Journalism Awards.

The organisation, praised for its data journalism and climate change coverage won two other awards on the night. Dean Massey scooped Camera Operator of the Year for his skill in composition, colour and innovative sequence production , whilst Sky News' Climate Live from COP26 was awarded the News Technology award for its use of technology in an ambitious and original way .

Sky News Director of Content Cristina Nicolotti Squires called it a "tremendous honour".

Announcing the Channel of the Year award, the RTS judging panel said; "The jury agreed that the winning channel - while doing its normal good job reporting breaking news - had been especially innovative in other ways. Its focus on data journalism and its dedicated climate change coverage stood out in particular".

John Ryley, Head of Sky News, said: In these uncertain times it has never been more important to champion fact-led, impartial reporting, and we're proud that Sky News has been recognised for this by winning News Channel of the Year for a phenomenal fifth year in a row.

The jury said the entries this year confirmed that when it comes to rolling news plurality is alive and well. Although some themes were shared - all offered different takes on the year's events. The jury agreed that the winning channel - while doing its normal good job reporting breaking news - had been especially innovative in other ways. It's focus on data journalism and its dedicated climate change coverage stood out in particular.

Camera Operator of the Year

The jury said there are a few elite camera operators who regularly feature in the final voting for this category. But this year a new name emerged whose skill in composition, colour and innovative sequence production won the day. 2021 was a crucial year for reporting the environment and this operator brought home the crisis facing our planet with his stunning submission.

WINNER: Climate Live Sky News

This category demonstrated that innovation is alive and well in the television journalism business. But the jury was especially impressed by one entry which used technology in an ambitious and original way. In particular it allowed the production team at base to control the output created 400 miles away.
