The annual SVG Regional Sports Production Summit returned to New York City on Wednesday as more than 230 industry professionals attended to learn about the latest in sports media- and workflow-management.
Developed by Sports Video Group's Sports Content Management (SCM) Advisory Committee and its Chair Anne Graham, Manager, Media Strategy & Project Planning, Warner Brothers Discovery, the event spotlighted the current state of the industry and how sports-media organizations can future-proof their content in an ever-changing world. Key topics included adapting to remote and hybrid workflows, storage and archiving on prem and in the cloud, the rise of AI and ML, best practices in metadata assignment and management, MAM and orchestration planning, and much more.
The 2024 SVG Sports Content Management Forum was held in New York City on Wednesday. The event opened with welcoming remarks from chairwoman Chair Anne Graham, Manager, Media Strategy & Project Planning, Warner Brothers Discovery.
All sessions from the 2024 Sports Content Management Summit will be available to watch on demand at SVG PLAY in the coming weeks.
The event opened with its tradition State of the Industry session. Sports leagues and broadcasters dissected the intricacies of today's media management workflow and offering their takes on navigating the complexities of organizing, storing, and accessing vast amounts of digital content. The session, which addressed asset tagging and metadata enrichment to cloud-based storage solutions and AI-driven content management systems featured Graham, as well as Byron Chapman, PGA TOUR, Director of Media Asset Management & Media Workflows; Ericka Duffy, Riot Games, Media Asset Manager; Dustin Myers, Fox Sports, SVP, Production Operations; and Dana Stone, NBA, VP, Digital Media Technologies.
Rounding out the morning sessions was a panel addressing the implementation and impact of Artificial Intelligence. What are the best media-management applications for both traditional-AI and generative-AI (GenAI) technologies and how can these tools push automation? What are the implications of text-to-video generation platforms - like OpenAI's Sora - within the sports-media space (for example, seamlessly upscaling HD to 4K)? A panel discussion featuring Byron Chapman, PGA TOUR, Director of Media Asset Management & Media Workflows; Travis Couture, Twelve Labs, Founding Solutions Architect; Louis Matignon, Perfect Memory, Head of Sales, EMEA; and Dustin Myers, Fox Sports, SVP, Production Operations addressed these challenging questions.
The event opened with a State of the Industry conversation featuring (from left) moderator Jason Dachman, Graham, PGA TOUR's Byron Chapman, Riot Games Ericka Duffy, FOX Sports' Dustin Myers, and the NBA's Dana Stone.
The afternoon opened with a bang with a keynote presentation from Chris Wolford, NASCAR, Managing Director, Media & Event Technology. In an effort to increase efficiency and boost its production capabilities, NASCAR implemented Perfect Memory's Cognitive Asset Management (CAM) solution into its central production environment earlier this year. The CAM system, which is being utilized for all post-production MAM needs, is able to fully integrate with NASCAR's data APIs for live and archival metadata of the sport. Attendees were treated to a dive into this innovative MAM-as-a-Brain approach that allows NASCAR to process, enrich, and search for content more easily thanks to auto-generated metadata and a next-gen search engine.
The rest of the afternoon showcased more thought-provoking panels, including a discussion on leveraging the cloud in content creation, distribution, and monetization. Industry leaders shared how they are leveraging cloud technology to bridge gaps, streamline workflows, and unlock new possibilities in their media management workflows. Discussing that topic was Chris Cruz, CBS Sports, Senior Director of Media Services; Pete Leone, Veritone, Sales Director for Sports and Live Entertainment; Manuel Minut, Vidispine - An Arvato Systems Brand, Solutions Architect; Grant Nodine, NHL, SVP, Technology; and David Rosen, Sony, VP, Cloud Applications and Solutions.
The 2024 SVG Sports Content Management Forum was highlighted by a keynote presentation from Chris Wolford, NASCAR, Managing Director, Media & Event Technology.
Next, Major League Baseball presented a comprehensive breakdown of how the MLB Media Center connects the league to its broadcast partners. This new portal provides the league's international and domestic broadcast partners with access to indexed content, including melt reels, highlights, game recaps, and interviews, for download and use on their platforms. Padraic Boyle, MLB Advanced Media, Senior Director, Enterprise Media and Brett Kaplan, MLB Network, Senior Content Services Lead shared their experiences.
Another roundtable discussion addressed the future of media storage. How are technology providers ensuring reliability and accessibility in the ever-changing landscape of sports media? Thought leaders offered a look at the latest trends and advancements in storage/archive hardware, software, and infrastructure, including high-performance storage arrays, tape-based archiving systems, cloud storage solutions, and hybrid storage architectures. Participating in the conversation were Mark Anderson, Seagate Technology, Manager, Channel Systems and Solutions Sales Team; Abhijit Dey, Perifery, GM and COO; Mark Russak, Warne
