Sony has today announced that N1, the exclusive affiliate of CNN in Serbia, Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, has successfully implemented an IP-based solution to enable remote live production in High Definition (HD) in its studios throughout the Adria region. The IP connection spans more than 300 kilometres between studios in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb, enabling the broadcaster to control and mix all live programming from one room.
N1, which has moved into final rehearsals ahead of going on-air in October, is set to broadcast HD news programmes 24 hours a day across three channels. The broadcaster has enjoyed significant value benefits as a result of deciding to remotely produce its live TV programmes from Belgrade, since its studios in Zagreb and Sarajevo are able to deliver live broadcasts without the need for additional control rooms or production crews.
The live over IP solution has been supplied by Serbia-based dealer Pro Video, working in partnership with Sony, and spans more than 1,800 kilometres across a Layer 3 Communications wide area network via Vienna. The set-up consists of nine HXC-D70 studio cameras, three MVS-3000A HD vision switchers and twelve NXL-IP55 live production units.
The approach to remote production adopted by N1 is pivotal to its operating model, and has been successful in rehearsals thanks to the negligible latency connection delivered by the IP set-up, since teams in remote studios can manage the program mix audio level without any comprehendible delay. In addition to broadcasting live news, the IP solution is being used to record directly from all three studios into a central server, to exchange audio and to communicate across intercom.
In the six months since the station was announced we have set ourselves the mission of achieving the very highest standards of reliability, quality and speed-to-screen, explained Igor Jovic, Chief Technical Director at N1. The technology from Sony at the heart of our broadcasting has proven to be a key element in achieving these standards, since it empowers us to be organisationally lean without compromising on the excellence of our news programmes.
Weve worked in lock step with N1 to ensure its roll-out of IP-based live production has been a resounding success, said Dragan Lazic, Key Account Manager, Sony Professional Solutions Europe. On the one hand, N1s circumstances entail some unique challenges, since coordination between the three production centres is so pivotal to everything the network does. On the other hand, however, the shift to IP is indicative of a growing industry trend, as broadcasters increasingly look to the value and performance that IP can offer.
Sony is at the forefront of the shift towards live over IP, which is ideally suited for broadcasters that want to combine steadfast continuity with creative control and reduced operational expenditure. Earlier this year Sony launched a licensing program for its AV over IP Interface for manufacturers, while later today, as part of its keynote at IBC 2014, it will demonstrate a full 4K production delivered live over IP between BCEs headquarters in Luxembourg and the RAI Exhibition Centre in Amsterdam.
