BRIAN ALLEN TO OFFER LESSONS LEARNED FROM SUPER STORM SANDY' AT SCTE CABLE-TEC EXPO ANNUAL LUNCHEON
Time Warner Cable Chief of Security to Address Preparation and Response to Devastating Storm
SEPT. 4, 2013 (Exton, PA) Brian Allen, Chief of Security for Time Warner Cable, will discuss lessons learned from Super Storm Sandy when the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) hosts its Annual Luncheon Tuesday, Oct. 22 at SCTE Cable-Tec Expo in Atlanta.
Allen, who is responsible for Time Warner Cable's crisis management and business continuity programs, will address the experiences of Time Warner Cable and its employees before, during and after the storm's devastation of the Middle Atlantic and New England states. The presentation, sponsored by Clearleap, will discuss the storm's impact on key operational needs, including communications, fuel, power and transportation, as well as:
Lessons learned from Time Warner Cable's post-mortem process and steps that are being taken to prepare for future crises;
How the growth of new cable services is creating a need for new approaches to business continuity and crisis management; and
How cable engineering and operations professionals can drive better levels of preparation across the industry.
"While we'd like to think of Sandy as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, the reality is that we can expect to be faced with similar challenges again," said Allen. "By documenting our efforts, we expect to improve our ability to maintain and quickly restore essential services when natural or man-made events threaten our networks in the future."
"Cable's response to Sandy was heroic, but the continued importance of our networks is driving the need for even faster restoration of services," said Mark Dzuban, president and CEO of SCTE. "We're grateful to Brian Allen for sharing Time Warner Cable's experiences with our attendees, and for outlining the roles they can play in expediting network recovery."
Prior to Allen's remarks, SCTE will present the Member of the Year and Women in Technology awards and will recognize members who are being inducted into the SCTE Hall of Fame. Luncheon tickets are included with all full-conference Expo registrations.
The luncheon will follow a wide-ranging Opening General Session that will include a keynote conversation between NCTA President & CEO Michael Powell and Kevin Hart, executive vice president and CTO of Cox Communications and chairman of the SCTE Cable-Tec Expo Program Committee. The Opening General Session also will include a network operations panel moderated by Comcast Cable Chief Network Officer and Executive Vice President John Schanz. The network operations panel will feature: Yvette Kanouff, executive vice president, corporate engineering and technology, Cablevision Systems Corporation; Guy McCormick, vice president, engineering, Cox Communications; Matthew Stanek, senior vice president of core, regional, metro and network operations, Time Warner Cable; and Marwan Fawaz, partner with Sarepta Advisors.
SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013 is set for Monday through Thursday, Oct. 21-24. Two pre-conference symposia, "DOCSIS 3.1 Engineering" and "Creating the Cable Generalist," will be held on Monday, Oct. 21. SCTE Cable-Tec Expo and the symposia will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta. Discounted pre-registration for both SCTE Cable-Tec Expo and the symposia is available through Oct. 8 at http://expo.scte.org.
SCTE Cable-Tec Expo is the leading venue for helping the cable telecommunications industry and its workforce to reduce costs, deploy new services and increase customer satisfaction. SCTE Cable-Tec Expo 2013 will offer a wide variety of learning events and demonstrations, as well as peer-to-peer interaction and networking.
Expo will feature thought leaders confronting technical challenges facing the industry; hundreds of hands-on, technology-centric exhibits; an extensive menu of robust and relevant technical workshops; the International Cable-Tec Games; the IP Challenge highlighting expertise in IP networking and engineering; and other events.
