ICANN5: ICANNWiki & Iron Mountain Succe by Shane Ryan

It's a week after ICANN, and the ICANNWiki team is pooling our collective memories for a clear snapshot of our time in Buenos Aires.

This being Jackie's second conference and Dustin's first, we wanted to make sure our time at ICANN 53 was productive and fun. We feel we managed to accomplish both pursuits in a few ways.

We expanded the team.

Before arriving in Buenos Aires, we partnered with a local organization to expand awareness around issues affecting Latin America. To increase the friendly and fun nature of our booth we collaborated with a local stakeholder who used her Spanish to increase the understanding of our work and our vision among the conference's many Spanish speaking attendees. This partnership was a great way to connect with the local and regional community in a meaningful way.

We followed the Opening Ceremony and Women's DNS Breakfast.

When we were able to break away from the booth we sought out sessions that we knew would bring important content to ICANNWiki. We delayed our booth set-up and attended the early Monday morning Opening Ceremony to learn more about the upcoming ICANN 54, to be held in Dublin, Ireland and more.

Session highlights included introductions and welcomes from Gabriel Brenta (Director at NIC.ar) and Rodrigo De La Parra (ICANN Regional VP). Our personal favorite part of the ceremony was the ICANN Multistakeholder Ethos Awards, which recognized the efforts of Nii Quaynor and Cheryl Langdon-Orr, long-time volunteers in the ICANN community.

The session concluded with some hard numbers about the IANA transition and its progress. President Chehade outlined a soft-deadline for the transition, describing the three-step process that lies ahead. Stakeholders across the globe have worked hard, and so far have committed upwards of 13,000 hours of their time to ensure the safe transfer of IANA.

Earlier that morning, Jackie attended the Women in DNS Breakfast held in the Catalinas room. The event begins bright and early at 7:30, and is a warm welcome to women in the DNS Community who want to connect and share their work or stories. Through our partnership with a local organization, we were able to share the good news about our Edit-a-thon and garner participation.

We rallied the troops and re-launched our Edit-a-thon event, a great outreach effort that resulted in a number of new articles and new personal profiles on ICANNWiki, in addition to vast improvements on existing articles. The event, which we will continue at future conferences, brought together wiki pros and newbies alike. Our team, along with Iron Mountain, worked together to create a comprehensive guide to editing our wiki (a sometimes daunting task). It was a pleasure to help these attendees learn the somewhat maze-like nature of our wiki, and this effort was made easier by Iron Mountain's support.
