Suicide suspected in Robin Williams death --

Comedian and Oscar-winning Hollywood actor Robin Williams was found dead in his home in California on Monday 11 August at the age of 63. According to authorities who responded to a 911 call, the apparent cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation. Though a full investigation is pending, the assumption is linked to Williams struggles with alcohol, depression and substance abuse. Robin has been battling severe depression of late, said publicist Mara Buxbaum. This is a tragic and sudden loss.

Early on in his career Williams was known for his work as a comedian, and later for iconic roles such as a cross dressing nanny in Mrs. Doubtfire, a therapist in Good Will Hunting and Teddy Roosevelt in Night at the Museum.

Williams won a number of awards for his acting work including an Academy Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Good Will Hunting, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for Good Morning Vietnam, a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Television Series Musical or Comedy for Mork and Mindy and a Golden Globe Special Achievement Award for Aladdin.

Friends and fans took to social media to express their grief:

Monty Python star Eric Idle tweeted: I can t believe my lovely friend is gone. My heart goes out to his wife and his beloved children. He brought us so much joy and laughter.

Ben Stiller tweeted in remembrance: I met him when I was 13 and a huge fan and he was so kind and I watched him be kind to every fan I ever saw him with

According to The Wrap Jay Leno said in a statement: I saw him on stage the very first time he auditioned at the improv in Los Angeles, and we have been friends ever since. Its a very sad day.

Stephen Fry tweeted: Devastating news about Robin Williams knew him a little and liked him a whole lot more. A brain wired like no other and so so kind.
