Hip-hop reaches its 50th anniversary in August 2023. In part, this is thanks to the music's origins in the United States back in 1973

Hip-hop is usually associated with a combination of music and rap lyrics.
Musicians like Kanye West, Tupac Shakur, and Eminem made the controversial genre famous since its start. South Africa's hip-hop scene is filled with the music of artists like Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, and AKA.

How the music genre started On 11 August 1973, DJ Kool Herc played a new beat at his sister's birthday party. The beat started a whole new music genre called hip-hop.
The music quickly spread after DJ Kool Herc, who mixed the first beats of this type at his sister's party.
South African hip-hop became famous in the 1980s. Group Prophets Of Da City (POC) that included Ready D is hailed as one of the first groups of its style. Black Noise is credited as one of the founding hip-hop groups in South Africa, according to SA Hip-Hop Mag.

Music from this genre even featured heavily at the South African Music Awards. More than seven videos from this genre nominated for Best Video during 2021.

Competitions like Hip Hop Kop, launched in November 2010, aim to keep the hip-hop music genre alive.
It's not without controversy: the song Larney Jou P*#s by Dookoom made waves after its release, with some asking how far freedom of speech can go.
Local show Love and Hip-Hop has captivated audiences too, bagging the award of Best International Show at the National Reality TV Awards in August 2023.
