Public service media leaders urged to be bold

Public service media (PSM) leaders must take positive risks to adapt to the changing digital landscape, EBU Members attending the EUROVISION ACADEMY Assembly 2013 in Geneva heard today (15 October).

Assembly keynote speaker Jan Metzger, Director General of German public service broadcaster Radio Bremen, told more than 50 delegates meeting in Geneva that PSM must focus on its strengths.

Mr Metzger cited the experience of his own organization, which he said had faced painful choices in redefining its focus.

"As much as we would like to be involved in every area of radio programming for example, the production of outstanding entertainment at this moment in time we lack the financial resources," said Mr Metzger. "As an organization, Radio Breman is simply too small to be good in some areas, which has led to some painful choices. We decided to focus on our strengths and today, I take pride in telling you that we are leaders in providing regional information, in particular, to young audiences."

Mr Metzger said PSM leaders must recognise that they are themselves a tool for change.

"Managers solve day to day problems," Mr Metzger added, "but good leaders possess the power to communicate interior images. Were not in administration, were in charge. During periods of change, we need to provide our teams with a sense of security and continuity. This can only be done if we bond with our employees, if we invest time in them as people."

Through Member case studies, practical examples and break-out sessions, the two-day conference is focused on three of the key challenges facing PSM supported by the EBUs corporate training division:

Leadership programmes, designed to develop current and future public media managers

The means to build and restore audience trust in editorial content

Exploring digital storytelling, in the context of content, output and staff profile

In response to these needs, EUROVISION ACADEMY has launched an Executive Programme to help develop the next generation of top public service executives.

The unique three week curriculum that targets the critical business and technical challenges specific to public service media in Europe has been developed in association with IESE Business School, and UCLA's Anderson School of Management.
