Producing accurate and editorially sound copy from a variety of sources, watching wire services and news feeds for the day's African news and breaking news, converting broadcast scripts into web-appropriate stories
Flagging changes and major moves in stories
Liaising with the Duty Editor and taking direction on delivery priorities
Sub editing, ensuring copy is factually accurate, grammatically correct, free of spelling errors and visually stimulating
Writing headlines
Writing African and international stories
Uploading stories and visual content into the content management system
Ensuring stories are tagged and effectively linked to other relevant content
Assisting in deciding on how best to visually illustrate stories
Assisting with the maintenance of, and contribution to social network profiles
Overseeing Africa desk writers.
Occasionally deputising for the Africa Editor
Requirements:
Computer literate
At least 5 year journalistic experience
Demonstrable interest in and passion for hard news with a particular focus on Africa
Sound editorial judgement
Must have excellent knowledge and a keen interest in news and current affairs on the African continent
Understanding of online news and new media
Understanding of social media
Excellent English
Strong writing skills
Strong visual sense
A passion for story telling
Strong understanding of journalistic ethics
Ability to work very quickly without sacrificing accuracy
Good grasp of legal issues around broadcast and online media
Strong work ethic, and drive to deliver flawless outcomes
Good sense of humour, and robust nature
Solutions- and outcomes-orientated
Ability to work under pressure making deadlines
Familiarity with one or more web content management systems
Good African contact base.
