
Familiar Themes Top the List of Television's Most Anticipated New Fall Series -- San Jose, CA September 16, 2015 TiVo Research and Analytics, Inc., a subsidiary of TiVo Inc., announced today the results of its 2015 Fall TV Survey; the survey revealed the fall TV series to which TiVo subscribers are most looking forward. ABC's revitalized comedy The Muppets tops the list of new series TiVo subscribers intend to watch at least once this fall. Additionally, two shows battle it out for second place, with CBS's Supergirl and NBC's Heroes Reborn in a virtual tie for the silver intends to watch medal. Fall TV series begin airing this week.
It is a drama-heavy fall season, with 12 of the 22 new broadcast series within that genre, and dramas appear to be attracting the greatest attention. Eight of the top ten programs respondents intend to watch are dramas, with exceptions for The Muppets coming in first and NBC's variety offering, Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris, tying for seventh. Although the survey was conducted at the end of August 2015, after extensive promotional activity during the summer for many of the fall TV series, awareness remains low for most of the new fall shows. Of the 22 shows debuting this fall, ten shows remain unknown to more than three-quarters of survey respondents, with only five programs scoring an awareness rating above forty percent.
TiVo's survey data show that most new shows have not yet broken through the awareness barrier for the upcoming fall season, said TiVo Chief Research Officer Jonathan Steuer. However, TiVo's OnePass rankings throughout the fall will provide an ongoing read of what shows viewers are selecting to record. These rankings will provide early and continuous insights into which shows are breaking through in a competitive programming environment where failure is the norm.
Returning Favorites
When asked to name the returning favorite shows to which respondents are most looking forward, each network garnered programs with top scores. The top two programs for each network are ABC's Modern Family and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D; CBS's The Big Bang Theory and Elementary; CW's The Flash and Arrow; Fox's Gotham and The Simpsons; and NBC's The Blacklist and Grimm.
Additional Key Findings
On the cable front, the top overall returning favorite shows among survey respondents are AMC's The Walking Dead, BBCA's Doctor Who, and FX's Fargo.
Nine percent of respondents report they do not plan to watch any of the new fall TV series.
More than half of respondents are aware of the new fall TV series sneak peeks being offered on the TiVo platform.
Close to half of all survey respondents find TiVo's related fall TV information to be useful.
Methodology
TiVo Research conducted the Fall 2015 New Broadcast Series Survey in August 2015. Respondents were part of the TiVo Advisors Panel, an opt-in panel of approximately 30,000 TiVo subscribers whose second-by-second viewing behavior is anonymously tracked on an ongoing basis. This viewing data is merged with TiVo Research's monthly attitudinal surveys, thereby allowing unprecedented insights into U.S. consumers' behavioral habits and television viewing. 12,186 panel members participated in this survey.
