New bearing design: FAG TORB toroidal roller bearings in X-life quality - high operational reliability under even the heaviest loads

Schaeffler is presenting a new bearing design at the 2015 Hannover Fair with its FAG TORB toroidal roller bearing. This single-row rolling bearing in X-life quality features an angular adjustment facility and is equipped with long, slightly crowned rollers. It thus combines the angular adjustment capabilities of a spherical roller bearing with the axial displacement of a cylindrical or needle roller bearing. The axial displacement is compensated inside the toroidal roller bearing, so only small and therefore negligible frictional forces occur. TORB bearings allow the operational reliability and cost-effectiveness of locating/non-locating bearing supports to be significantly increased. The TORB range of toroidal roller bearings from FAG comprises eight series.

FAG TORB - the ideal non-locating bearing concept

Temperature-related linear expansion and misalignments mean that non-locating bearing designs are particularly important. FAG TORB toroidal roller bearings are the perfect non-locating bearing for use in combination with a spherical roller bearing as the locating bearing, allowing either higher load ratings or a smaller design envelope to be achieved than with conventional locating/non-locating bearing supports.

FAG TORB toroidal roller bearings compensate large axial linear expansions between the raceways and rolling elements in the bearing. Even when greater axial displacement occurs, the load is still distributed symmetrically to the roller rows in the (locating) spherical roller bearing. TORB bearings damp the axial vibrations of the entire bearing system, which reduces the stress placed on the spherical roller bearing and thereby positively influences the entire bearing systems operating life. This can be more than doubled, while the overall operating costs (TCO) are also lower because the maintenance costs are reduced and the downtimes shortened by half.

Complete interchangeability with the bearings that were previously used is ensured, as TORB bearings are manufactured in the same ISO dimension series and measurements as spherical and cylindrical roller bearings that are used as non-locating bearings.

Two designs for a very high load carrying capacity

Toroidal roller bearings are available in two designs: As full complement bearings and as bearings with a cage. When the design envelope is restricted, they provide a very high radial load carrying capacity even when skewing or axial displacements have to be compensated. The full complement bearing design with the suffix V offers a particularly high load carrying capacity.

The concave raceways of the inner and outer ring are positioned centrally in relation to the center of the bearing, and the matched raceway profiles ensure both optimum stress distribution in the bearing and low-friction running. The rollers are self-guiding, meaning that they always position themselves in such a way that the load is distributed precisely over the rollers length, even when the rings are skewed or shifted in relation to each other.

FAG TORB toroidal roller bearings are characterized by their high operational reliability and long operating life. They are dimensionally stable up to an operating temperature of 200 C as standard. Thanks to its high load carrying capacity, the full complement variant with the suffix V is suitable for use in applications such as continuous casting plants.

In addition to steel and rolling mills, the main areas of application also include belt and conveyor systems, paper machines (e.g. in drying cylinders), drives in marine applications, turbomachinery used in power generation (e.g. in ventilators), textile machinery, crushers, food processing machines, and agricultural machinery.

X-life - premium quality for rolling bearings

X-life is the seal of quality for particularly high-performance products from the INA and FAG brands. They are characterized by a higher rating and operating life - the result of higher dynamic load ratings than those of current standard products. The higher performance is down to the use of state-of-the-art manufacturing technologies and improved internal constructions. This produces better and more even surfaces and contact surfaces, which means optimized load distribution in the bearing. FAGs TORB toroidal roller bearings are also manufactured in proven X-life quality, and their load ratings are up to 15% higher than those of comparable premium products from competitors.
